Anyone using non-traditional music?

Recommended Posts

IMO some of the untraditional songs we are using include Hey Ya (Obadiah Parker), 18th Floor Balcony (Blue October), stuff covered by Vitamin String Quartet and My Life Would Suck Without You (trying to find a cover version of this so it isn't all Kelly Clarkson in your face).

My $.02 for what it is worth... I think picking songs has been the hardest part of the planning!!!!! Most of BDW wants non-traditional so the ideas you see here probably aren't as cliche as you may think. FI keeps reminding me that every wedding we have been to in the last 6 years have all used the here comes the bride and classical recessional music. So picking something that you love and really represents you and FI will make a statement and be unique in most of your guests eyes. I can't wait to see what other people post as "non-traditional songs"!

We haven't decided on our first dance song yet, but our processional we are having a friend create for us. Ever since I've known my fiance his 'pump up' song has been 'Eye of the Tiger', before exams, presentations, nights out....

So our friend is going to turn 'Eye of the Tiger' into a classical, acoustic, lyricless version for us. We'll have it recorded before we go (luckily I've got a friend with the equipment to do it!) so he doesn't have to risk bringin his guitar. Hoping between the song (which will be a surprise to our guests) and our good friends ceremony (he's going to officiate and has been creative liscence), there will be enough humor infused in the event to keep me from being a bawling mess! lol

Ok so nothing is set in stone yet but here are my ideas:

Wedding party processional - "Feeling Good" Michael Buble (my mother hates this idea)
Brides processional - "Something" The Beatles
Recessional - "I Want to Break Free" Queen
Wedding party & Bride & Groom reception entrance - "Black & Gold" Sam Sparro
First Dance "Look After You" The Fray (song gets me choked up so I'm still looking)

Tell me if I'm crazy blush2.gif
I love your ideas!! Have you heard Jim Sturgess' version of 'Something'(from Across the Universe)? Its beautiful. I LOVE The Beatles, but it's a nice modern version.

Ooh good idea on finding the Kelly cover in an acoustic version! I might be "borrowing" some of yours and KittenHeart's ideas wink.gif

We did non-traditional stuff too. This is the CD I handed our wedding co-ordinator. We walked down the aisle to Island in the Sun - Weezer. The rest of the songs played out after the ceremony while we signed our docs and had our champagne toast and did pictures.

1. Island in the Sun - Weezer

2. The Gift - Angels & Airwaves

3. Heaven - Angels & Airwaves

4. Don't Wait - Dashboard Confessional

5. Better Together - Jack Johnson

6. In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel

7. Love You Madly - Cake

8. Vindicated - Dashboard Confessional

9. You Only Live Once - The Strokes

10. I'll Catch You - The Get Up Kids

The first 3 songs are in our wedding video as well.

My husband totally has a "pump up" song too! And we used it at our wedding. I played it as the guests were being seated so that he'd get all pumped up before he walked down the aisle. It was a surprise to him. It was Elvis Burning Love. Sadly, he was so nervous he didn't even notice! LOL!! My guests did though, and they enjoyed it.

As for your first dance, why does it have to be slow? if that's your song, then use it! That's what I say anyways.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
