We went with Jamaica:

1. Cheaper than a lot of destinations

2. Ceremony would be legal w/o a lot of extra requirements like blood tests

3. Referral by a friend who had gotten married at the RIU Negril

4. Lots of direct flights from Atlanta everyday which would make it easy for our guests.

Specifically chose Ocho Rios bc of all the excursions

Costa Rica because none of our guest had ever been there and neither have we. When we were in Jamaica and Cabo we met a few people who have been to Costa Rica and highly recommended it. So we thought what the heck... There are tons of activities and its really somewhere most of our friends and family would never think of visiting.

We wanted a destination wedding b/c none of our family lives in Calgary and all our family and friends are scattered across western canada, plus I went to school in philadlephia so I have a ton of friends down on the East Coast of the US. Regardless whether our wedding was in calgary or in mexico, it would have been a destination wedding for almost everyone so we thought why not take it to the beach!

We chose Huatulco, Mexico because its somewhere that we knew 99% of our guests had never been before (which was important to us since destination weddings are becoming so popular). We have heard nothing but amazing things about the area and we didnt want to do the cancun/Mayan/cabo area of Mexico b/c those are the most popular places in mexico that people get married and we wanted something different.. And going with the dreams resort was a no brainer for us b/c we had been to a wedding at the Dreams Punta Cana resort this past year and it was amazing-the food, the wedding, the resort.. everything!

It was on our first vacation to the Mayan that we saw a wedding on the beach at our resort. It was right then and there that I knew I wanted to have a DW and get married on the beach. I always knew that I wanted a smaller wedding with my closest family and friends and I thought this was the perfect way to do it!

We chose the DR b/c we wanted to get married somewhere neither of us had been before, so that the entire experience was something new for both of us.

First, we settled on the DR ... then I started researching the different areas ... and came to decide on Punta Cana.

Since Tom was in Iraq, I narrowed it down to my Top 5 Punta Cana resorts ... based on price, amenities, wedding packages (we wanted a gazebo), activities for different age groups, etc., luxury vs fun (we wanted both) ... and looking at resorts that would be good for the wedding and also resorts that would be good for our honeymoon.

I emailed my top 5 choices to Tom and asked for his input. Without him knowing my Top 2 choices, he picked the exact same two.

So, we went with the more group/family/fun/friendly resort (also more affordable) of the two for the DW -- PARADISUS PUNTA CANA

and the more luxurious resort (and much pricier) for our honeymoon -- PARADISUS PALMA REAL

We could not have been happier with our choices. PPC was absolutely perfect for our group and our wedding, while PPR was the exact sort of luxury and relaxation that we hoped for in a honeymoon.

100% SATISFACTION.

We wanted a beach wedding not too far from where most of our friends & family live (Miami), so we chose DR. Although my boyfriend's father is Dominican, that really has nothing to do with it; we went to DR b4 & I loved the ppl and atmosphere :)

Plus we wanted it to be like a mini vaca with our guests & we didn't want to spend a fortune on a wedding. We are pretty laidback so it just suited us :-D

The first tropical vacation that Larry went on was to the Dominican with me and my family. We loved the trip so much that when we got engaged, we decided to go back there to get married. I was looking at some other resorts, but in the end we really enjoyed the resort that we stayed at so we decided to go back there rather than trying another one with all our guests. I have wanted to have a DW for years and wanted to have white sand, so Punta Cana was perfect for that. Several of our guests will be returning to the Grand Palladium in Punta Cana, and several have also been to other Palladium resorts and love them. We are so excited and can't wait for the big day to be here!!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
