We are planning the wedding for November 2010 with the AHR about 2 weeks later. I really like the idea of cocktails & hors d'oeurves to start the evening off, dancing and then a late lunch. Anyone out there done this kind of AHR already? How did the timing work? Was it well received? All the weddings around here are pretty much the same: buffet dinner, reception program (with too many speeches), dance, midnight lunch. We want to be unique!

I think that we have the same type of AHR planned. In May, 2010 we are having a party. It will start with cocktails and appetizers at 8:00 pm. At 8:30 pm. we will ask everyone to enter the room. From there we will have introductions, a slide show of the destination wedding and then start the dance. At around 11:00 pm. there will be a sweet table and hoping for a chocolate fountain as well.
So basically it will be one big party.
There will also be a section where the bride & groom will change and we have planned a hot salsa dance complete with lifts. It should be fun.

Hi everyone! We're planning a DW in the Mayan Riviera in April 2010, and throwing a AHR in Ottawa (my FI and I are both from here originally) in July 2010. I've already booked a banquet hall, but I'm trying to make it a more casual dinner and dance reception. We won't be doing anything too traditional, other than our first dance. Since the AHR is in the summer, we're going to let everyone know that they can dress more casually for the party.

I haven't quite figured out what to hand out as favours...I was thinking of keeping things simple (and inexpensive) and just have candy favours in a cute box. I did spot some cute palm tree favour boxes at weddingfavours.ca.

Is anyone planning on doing a slideshow of the wedding?

So....I'm not Canadian but my fiance is. His family lives on the east coast (Brampton, Ontario - just outside Toronto). We're having our AHR there this Saturday!! But don't get married till February. His parents are hosting and thought this would be easier since we need to have two AHRs and getting that much vacation time off around the wedding would be impossible. They've booked the Peel Regional Police Association banquet hall, which i've yet to see.

It's much more formal and traditional than I wanted. 6pm cocktail hour, 7pm seated dinner, DJ, open bar. But it will be fun. The DJ keeps emailing me asking me what we're doing about the "kissing game", I continue to ignore him. Those traditional things are all the working of my FMIL but they're hosting so i'm letting them do what they want....

As for favors, my FMIL ordered customized shot glasses. I haven't seen them yet either! Haha

You're going to love the The Pines...it's a fabulous place.

We're getting married May 4, 2010 at Playa Pesquero in Cuba and having our AHR at a legion on August 7, 2010. The legion was obviously cheap (but we're paying for everything...including 7 people to come down to Cuba with us) but since we have friends in the catering business and entertainment (slid show and dj) I'm hoping that with the amount of money we're saving I can splurge on the decorations and transform the place :).
I've started shopping at Cambridge Surplus, Liquidation World, Dollarama and Michaels (with the 40% of coupon as well).
Fiance has already told me that he wants to dress up for the AHR which means I get to wear the dress again smile29.gif

Hi Everyone,

I'm a little ways away from our DW (Jan 2011) but have been doing a lot of thinking/planning for our AHR. I know there are a lot of people that we would like to share our day with us but can't so we're going to do a AH*D* dance..

It will start probably around 7:30 for h'ors dourves and drinks then do the dance part. We're going to put up a slide show of the DW along with maybe some printed pics. We plan on doing the dance (with DJ) for the rest of the night. Probably no formal speaches but if anyone wants to say something they can. We'll do a late night basic buffett. We're doing DW due to costs so we can't have an open bar. I was on another tread and found that a lot of people who did cash bars were giving 2 free drink tickets to each guest which I think is a great idea. May do some homemade wine and have that as a "freebie" too. Not sure.

I'm doing a lot of DIY's from hall decorations, centrepieces, flower arrangements, cake/cupcakes, invitations, etc...

Happy Planing all!

Cheers

Hi MissBliss.... just got married on April 12 in Dominican Republic and we are also planning our AHR here in Ottawa for June. Haven't planned too much yet. Hoping to have it here at home but we may end up having so many people, we may have to consider a hall.Where are you having yours in the end? Did you send invites out? We ended up with 40 people joining us in Punta Cana so we have had a big party there but now want to do something with everyone else. Not sure if we will have wedding favours but I would like to maybe to a cupcake tree or something. Are you having a sit down meal?

we tried to avoid an AHR and only do a DW but our familes had a fit, they want the large chinese banquet with the 10 courses, all relatives and friends, tea ceremony etc.....so after some tears and fears (what a gong show!) we have booked a AHR venue & have joined the club.

happy planning ladies!!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
