Has anyone bought their dress too small on purpose?

Recommended Posts

I agree with everyone else, order it in the size that you are. I was thinking the same thing, I started doing a bootcamp program so I waited until the last possible moment to order my dress and still have time to make alteations. This way I was down some inches (2 dress sizes) so I won't have as many alterations to do if I continue to lose and I also knew that I would fit into my dress if there was blip in myt losing weight. You probably don't have to order until December so you still have 3 months until you have to be measured for your dress.

I actually bought my dress two sizes too small when I ordered my wedding gown.

Would I recommend it??

Well, it all depends on how dedicated you are about losing the 30 lbs...which is totally doable...YOU GO GIRL!! However, if ordering your dress smaller won't be enough incentive for you than I would say NO WAY! As everyone has said on here...it is that much easier to scale a dress size down than it is to make bigger.

With all that being said...my dress that I ordered has come in and it fit!...2 months ago. I went to try it on yesterday and lo and behold...it is probably one or two sizes too big for me now...a grand total of 4 dress sizes since I first ordered it. I was told that the alterations would become quite pricey for me because of the style of my dress (it is covered in swarovski crystals which will have to be removed and sewn back on after taking it in)...however, I am super glad that I purchased smaller because they said that they would only be able to bring it down two sizes for my style of dress without altering the look of it completely! If I hadn't ordered smaller, I would be out shopping for a new dress off the rack right at this very moment!!!

I agree with everyone else as well when they say to wait until the very last minute to order your dress. I was told to allow 6 months for the dress to come in...and at least one month for alterations...so about 7 months total. Although, they do come in earlier (mine came in 3 months).

Good luck and I LOVE the Caprice...stunning!

I totally recommend waiting to order your dress. If you are starting your work out program now and your wedding is in April, October would be the right time to order it. I was in the same boat as you and waited about 2 months from when I really wanted to order the dress and I did end up getting one 2 sizes smaller. It fits perfect now and even though I have a goal of another 15 lbs I know that my body won't change that much so alterations shouldn't be outrageous. Good luck!

What a gorgeous dress -- and kudos on setting your goal and doing whatever is necessary to reach it!

Maybe you could buy it one size larger than you think you will end up being...(ie. if you are currently a street size 12, and your goal is to get down to an 8, then maybe play it on the safe side and order a 10?) Since it doesn't have a corset back, you might want to talk to the seamstress at the dress shop and ask how much it would be possible to alter it (up or down) before you officially order.

That way, even if it does need alterations, perhaps it won't be as expensive to have it customized to fit your new shape! GOOD LUCK wink.gif

I used to work in a bridal shop, and even if you lose weight, you need to size the dress for the largest part of your body as very little (if any) of the dress can be let out. So while some parts of the dress may fit after the weight loss, other areas may not. It is true that what you may like on you now may change after you lose weight. I would highly recommend ordering the dress in your current size if you don't have sufficient ordering time to wait, or consider another dress. Your wedding dress should make you feel beautiful and special on your wedding day and you deserve no less!

If I were in your position, I would definitely wait until mid-October to select & purchase your gown. Typically, 6 months prior to your wedding date is more than enough time to order, pick up, do a fitting, & get alterations before your big day...so you could give yourself a month & a half to see where you are in terms of your weightloss goals...if you've lost weight by then you may be able to tell where your body is going to lose weight the most/fastest & which parts may take more work...this could help you decide what dress shape will flatter you the most. If you wait to purchase your gown, I would still order the size you fit in at the time you try it on in the store. Have you lost 30 lbs before? Do you know what size you will be after the 30 lbs comes off? I would be careful w/ this (but that's just me). Good luck!

DEH - that's the dress I'm also thinking of getting! I found this post because I was searching the threads for someone talking about the dress (or better yet IN the dress). I tried it on this weekend and it was really big in my chest (which is normally NOT a problem). Are you ordering it from the bridal store or online?

I was going to say the same thing. You don't know where the 30 lbs are going to come from on your body. To go along with what everyone is saying, it's much easier to take in than let out.

Were you able to take a picture in the dress? I'm dieing to see it on someone other than the model! I LOVE the Caprice and a bridal store ordered it, but it won't be here until December.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
