Reception Thoughts

Recommended Posts

Hey girls,

Looking for some advice for my AHR. We're having a really small wedding and then having a party when we get home to the UK for everyone who we didn't invite to Australia.

The trouble I'm having at the minute is I'm undecided on how formal I want the evening to be. We've already booked a really nice hotel for the evening and mum and dad have said they want to have a ceilidh band, so they're paying for that and a disco for us.

Food wise, I'd love to have a carvery - with some nut roast or something for the veggies! That way we can have a really nice evening without the formality of a proper sit down meal.

I don't know whether to get a photographer? I know there will be lots of people with cameras, and we'll be able to get these in one area, but I don't know if it's worth while getting someone 'professional' in to do some shots.

I don't know if I should have a cake as well. We'll have something sweet, but I don't know if a cake would seem more appropriate.

Decisions decisions... If anyone can help, I'd love any advice you've got!

I can tell you what we did:

Cake? We did not do a cake. In part becuase we are not big cake eaters and I did not want to have to cut it. We figured if it was there - people would want us to cut it. We did a selecton of desserts (gelato, cookies, chocolate fountain, and parfaits), which people seemed to really enjoy.

Photographer? Pictures are extremely important to me. Yet, I opted not to hire a photographer. I put disposible cameras on the tables and figured I could get copies of people's digital prints. A month later and I haven't been able to get digital copies from anyone. And, for the cost of purchasing and printing a lot of okay pictures from the disposible cameras, I wish I had looked into how much a photographer would have cost.

We're doing cupcakes instead of cake. IMO, I think a formal cake might be too stuffy. Have fun with something like a cookie buffet with shots of milk or an ice cream sundae bar :)

We are not getting a photog because we have done e-pics, I did BD pics and we are paying for an outside photog to come to Mexico. My friends think they are the paparazzi so we set up a photo share site on picasaweb for everyone to upload their pics.

Happy planning!

We're planning on having our AHR at a nice venue, but just having the big expense be entertainment so we can have dancing. We'll have some kind of buffet but nothing too fancy and I'm really leaning toward doing a cupcake tower thing, or maybe a dessert buffet with really small portions, like a cookie with a milk shot, or a little two bite size creme brulee. If you do something small like that, it keeps the cost down and it's the presentation that makes it special, not how much you spent on food for everyone.

Also, enough of my friends, including some of the wedding party are amateur(but really talented) photographers so I think I will just talk to them personally and ask if they would mind taking pictures while they are at the AHR and get the pictures to me so they know that I am expecting their pictures instead of asking them to contribute to our collection. If that makes sense.

We're definitely wearing our outfits again - can't resist wearing it twice and being justified to do so! *grin*

I like the idea of cupcakes - I could even do those myself I guess!

I'm sorry your photos didn't work out Jamaica0169 - I'd hate for that to happen. Maybe it would be worthwhile having a look around and seeing what I could get for the evening...

What other traditions are you girls wanting to tie into your AHRhuh.gif Anything really different that you're glad you're going to do/did dohuh.gif

If you didn't have a cake at the wedding - it might be fun to have one at your AHR so your guests could be a part of the traditional cake cutting. Of course, cupcakes would be fun too and you and your husband could always shove some cupcake in each other's faces if you wanted. I think I would look into how much a photographer costs too. Disposable cameras seem like a good idea, but they take horrible pics and they will cost a lot to print too.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
