buy house and plan wedding?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

i just wanted to know if anyone planned their wedding AND bought a house in the same time frame. Our wedding is next year, but we've been looking at houses. We found one, and it's great.

My fiance says we should push the wedding back and focus on the house. I say we should just continue with wedding, but on a smaller scale.

What should be do?

My fiance is concerned because we need to put down a deposit on the resort and provide $ for a down payment on the house in the same time frame. The house doesn't need a lot of work, but we do want to work on small cosmetic things, one at a time.

Are we taking on too much? Should we wait another year to get married?

Umm that is a hard one and a very personal decision. It can be done, but it all depends on your budget. Do you think you would be happy with a smaller scale wedding or would you look back and wish you would've done those few extra things? Is your heart set on that date or could you push it back a couple months? a year? All questions that you and your FI would have to answer.

We just bought a house in November 2008, and although I LOVE it. I kinda wish we would've rented a little longer to save up more money.

Keep us updated on what you two decide :)

DH and I bought a house in Nov '08 & were married in Jan '09.

Our wedding was basically already paid for (the trip part anyway) & we didn't need a down payment for the house (first time home owners incentives, etc!) so our situations aren't exactly the same. But, with the new home purchase & the other weddding costs we didn't really have the money to do "fixer up" kind of things. But now that we've got a bit more cash flow we are starting to do them now. Our house was livable & we figured the painting & cosmetic stuff could wait. We were very anxious to be in our own home & I wasn't putting off the wedding!!!

Like flbluiiis said above, this is a very personal decision so do what's best for you. Good Luck!!! :)

We're also in a similar situation. We're actually building a house right now, which should be done this fall...and then our wedding is next March. I definitely feel like there's a lot going on a one time, but it's also really exciting! If it works for you and it's in your budget, than definitely go for it!

We were also in a similar situation....DH proposed in Dec.2006 but we didn't get married until last year because he wanted to focus on buying a house first. I was sad at first, but now I am very happy we waited. We bought our house in June '08 and got married that October.

I agree with the other posts....If you can afford to do both, then GO FOR IT! If not, there's no harm in waiting.

I agree with everyone else. It is completely a personal decision. However, if its something you want to do it is VERY doable. We got married June 26th and closed on our house on July 7th. Very close together and to be honest, it wasn't the funnest (I know, not a word) thing to do but it wasn't that bad. The last month while I was finishing up wedding stuff, my DH finished up all the home owner's stuff and we just kept each other in the loop. Good luck with whatever you decide!

That's pretty much what happened with us! DH was not too interested in the wedding stuff, so he did the majority of the house stuff!!

We closed on our house October 31 and left for the wedding three weeks later. I would say aside from the obvious finanical constraints, it was extremely stressful moving, dealing with the closing and everything that goes along with it - and packing for a DW. If I had to do it all over again I probably would have waited to buy a home until after we were married.

We got engaged on Oct 31st, 2008 and I started planning and house hunting at the same time! We closed on our house and moved in Feb 1st, 2009, and we are getting married Sept 9,2009.

This year has been a hard one financially... but we have managed and I'm glad we did! We plan on having our AHR here at the house too.

Go with what you feel you can handle,it will all work out!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
