What if you see pics by other photographers that you like? Would a photographer be offended if you were showing them someone else's work as an idea or inspiration?

Absolutely not!! I certainly wouldn't be offended!! cheesy.gif In fact, I would totally recommend doing that!

What you need to watch out for, though, is if you see a style that you love online but you have hired a photographer with a completely different aesthetic...you may not end up with the photographs you were hoping for.

A few things could happen (assuming the photographer you hired doesn't specialize in the style you have found):
1. They may do wonderfully and give you absolutely what you've hoped for.
2. They may feel pressured into shooting the way you want them to, and not the way their personal artist's eye tells them to.
3. They may just have to explain to you that they don't think they will be able to give you what you want.

Number 1 is awesome but lucky.
Number 2 is kinda sucky. lol.
and Number 3 is a responsible photographer.

I guess a good idea before EVER hiring your wedding photographer is to get online to various blogs, look through wedding articles at the pictures, and...well, pretty much any photography you see. It doesn't have to be wedding related at all!! Find the style of images that you really, really love and then do some research to find the photographer that will give you that look. That way, you don't have to present them with a list or images that they might not feel comfortable emulating.

If you find photographers on the interweb that you love, just throw their names into the forums here on BDW!

I spend a few hours a week just looking through other photographer's blogs and portfolios, and I am betting most of the other professionals on here do the same. Recommendations for your personal style out the wazoo!! lol.

(I know that got a bit lengthy...sorry about that!! :) It was a great question, though...)

I actually want to add one more thing to that book I just wrote..lol.

A photographer on your wedding day, regardless of the lists they are given...or weather they call themselves traditional or photojournalistic...are going to be flying by the seat of the their pants all day. A wedding, no matter how many times you have shot one, is different everytime.

So, if a photographer has studied a list of poses...you may get them, but they will most likely be not as inspired as the rest of the shots you will get. A photographer is, first and foremost, an artist. Every shot he/she takes is going to be taken with their artist's eye and not while thinking about a list they have seen. They are taken in the moment...

Definitely give them a list if it makes you feel more comfortable, or if the photographer is new...but any seasoned wedding photographer is going to be shooting from a mental list of shots they know every bride wants. Plus, they do it automatically without thinking.

Right...done. Hope that helps!!

The End. wink.gif

I was kinds of thinking the same thing...if you have an experienced photographer, they probably have a good idea of the shots mosts brides are looking for.

Thank you so much for the detailed answer - I definitely like it better than just a "yes or no" type answer :) Very helpful!

  • 1 month later...

Also, I would recommend checking out photographer websites... especially if you can see a proof gallery of someone's actual wedding. check out JAIMECAMPANELLI.COM

*my best friend happens to be a wedding photog and i know you can see some of her proofs in addition to the highlighted shots. Then you may get ideas of shots you want (and some you may NOT) :o)

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
