Heck yeah!!! When a photographer is just trying to get a great abroad portfolio going, most of them will be willing to shoot for just travel expenses. What you have to watch out for, are the photographers who don't know what they are getting into. Make sure that they are incredibly experienced in weddings. You certainly don't want a newb abroad wedding photographer in addition to having that same photographer be new to the wedding industry.

So, if you are going to go this route....seriously (but super politely, of course) give your potential photographer the 2nd degree. Find out what their processes are for portraits. Look at their portfolio and ask how those weddings went. Ask for references!! Other brides are always willing to rave about their photographers if they are awesome.

But, don't settle. Seriously. A lot of photographers will jump at the chance to shoot a first destination wedding. Just make sure those photographers are who YOU want to hire.

Good luck!!!

There are definitely ways to find travel costs only photogs. We were able to find one by asking in the graphic design department of the local university. We were expecting to get someone with not much experience but with an awesome portfolio, and instead we are getting a very experienced award-winning photographer (who has done many weddings) with a great resume and the photojournalism style that I wanted.

The last hurdle is that he has to ask for the time off, since he is also employed full-time as the university's official photographer! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it works out. Then I have to draft a contract (or revise his standard one) to cover all the unexpected things I've seen on this forum. Thanks to this board, I'm prepared to lay out all the potential issues in the contract. Plus it helps to be a lawyer whose main task is contract drafting...I like to think I'm good at disaster-proofing an agreement. :)

So I think anyone that wants to try to find a travel costs photographer should do so. You get to choose from the portfolios and the worst they can say is no and the best is that you get amazing pics to treasure forever!

  • 2 weeks later...

I like the photographer I found as he didn't need an assistant -so bonus I only had to pay airfare/hotel for one person, and he came up with a photo package price just for me. A custom made package I guess since he knew my price limit.

He really fit in great with my guests but he also did his own thing during the day time.

I searched for photogs in the States and in Canada. The guy I booked is from Montreal Canada. Not sure if we're permitted to mention names on here - but I do believe most photogs would like to include this new trend of destination weddings in their portfolio and if the wedding happens during a non busy period for them -they are doubly excited to help.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
