I'm just from a small town so I have no idea about costs in NYC, but to me $50 is more than like 2 hours worth of pay?! I'm cheap, and only get a cut (no colour, etc) so I pay $34 and just give them a $40. If I had to pay $240, then I'd probably give them $30 or $35.

They get paid by their employeer, plus tips right? I think I need to switch careers! :) But I do agree that amazing hairstylers deserve a good tip so . . . I don't know what I'm trying to say! lol I'm a tool :o)

Michael and Phil Steingard are located in Ontario, but travel to Punta Cana quite often during the year. There is a good chance they will be down already during your wedding week, so this will cut travel costs

I pretty much always tip 15-20%, more on the 20% side. And wow, $240 is expensive!

Well I'm sure glad I found this thread! I am going tonight to get my hair completely redone...just no colouring at the moment.
I'm going to a pretty nice Salon, it's actually named one of the top in North America. Not that I really care about that lol But I've honestly never really treated myself to going to a "nice" place to have my hair done.

But I figured if I want a complete NEW look then I better pay more for it.
But I was wondering how much I should tip my stylist when she's done!

Thanks so much ladies, I was thinking 15-20%!

I tip about 25% for my hairstylist, a little more on days where she has done an more amazing job than usual.

My stylist is the owner of his salon in Yorkville (Toronto) and I usually pay $250 for colour and cut. I only go every 3-4 months, and tip him $20 since I had read somewhere that you don't even need to tip the owners. He doesn't seem to think it's under-tipping, we're now friends outside of work and BBerry messenger each other regularly :-) I do give $5 to the shampoo guy as well, and bring them baked goods when I go in...

At the salon I go to the owner cuts my hair ($160) and for my highlights I have to see a colorist who charges ($130). I normally do the appointments on different days-- not that it should matter. I always struggle with how much I'm supposed to tip.

Normally I give the owner $30 which would be just under 20% and the colorist $25. Then I tip the person who washes and blows-out my hair $5-10 depending on how I'm feeling (my stylist cuts hair dry so the hair washer also has to blow out my hair before cutting but then my stylist puts the finishing touches on it after the cut.

I've always heard that you don't tip the owner and I'd love to know if that is truly the case. He's never mentioned to me that I don't need to tip him... not that he would anyways.

I tell you, I think I'm in the wrong industry! They seem to make great money!

I tip $15 - mine overcharges though so I don't feel bad, and I've gone to her forever sooooo...then I give the shampoo girl $3-5

The lady who cuts my hair also shampoos it so i just do one tip, about 20% usually.

I pay about $40 for my haircut and I usually tip $6. He would get a better tip but when I go there I am always waiting for him to finish other people and sometimes I am there 2 hours just for a haircut.

I decided to do some research - I'd also heard you don't tip the owner -my hair stylist used to own salons and was telling me how stylists make a percentage of the $$$ they bring in - they don't get paid a salary or by the hour like most of us do - they depend on the tips a lot. Here's an article I found.
