New York Area Brides - Dress Shopping

Recommended Posts

Hey ladies,

Just a quick little note about a bridal center I went to last week. I heard good things about RK Bridal on 39th btw. 8th & 9th. Unfortunately, my experience was not so good at all. I had the consultant Gilda, and she was HORRIBLE. Everything about the experience was bad. I told her A-line, strapless, ruching and not a lot of beadwork/lace. She had me try on 7 mermaid style dresses. My size 10 butt did not look remotely good in these dresses. After I had my sister and friend look for A-Line (on their own- because Gilda didn't guide them), the last 2 dresses I found were on the right track. Unfortunately, we wasted so much time with the other dresses, she said "No more dresses, I have to clean my dressing room before 6:45 for 7 pm close." My friend said I'll help you clean up if we can do 1 more dress, and she let her clean her dressing room...HOW HORRIBLE IS THAT!

I just wanted to share my experience in the event any NY, NJ or CT brides go to this place, request to NOT have Gilda. She kept pushing this 1 dress and didn't listen to my feedback. She said you just need a bigger size and then it won't be as tight on your butt, meanwhile that's the style of the dress. UGH!!!

I was a little discouraged, but I know I have time on my side. After my 5th place, I am still searching and hoping to finally fall in love. I have yet to go "OMG, this is IT!"

Good luck to all!!!

AWWWW so sorry to hear that happened to you! I was actually just going to post on here about a place in NYC for dresses that might just work for you. It's called Bridal Garden. They are a not-for-profit that sells designer wedding gowns for up to 75% off the original price and all the profits of the dresses go to help the education of children. I read on another site that they were VERY nice! It's worth a shot!

I also went to RK bridal and liked some of them but didn't find the one. Try pronovias in NYC---you should try to go to trunk show they give discounts :mswink

I am so sorry that you had a bad experience at RK Bridal...

I went to literally over 50-60 bridal stores.. almost every store in the NY/NJ metro area ranging from super high end to Davids Bridal. I had my best experience at RK Bridal. My consultant was amazing; didn't try to push the most expensive dresses on me... found every dress that I brought a picture of (at least 10) and also brought other dresses that she thought would flatter me. She was brutally honest with me about what looked good and what didn't... which I guess may offend some people, but I am brutally honest myself so I really appreciated the "your butt looks huge in that" or the "that does NOT look good on you girl" comments. LOL. They were not pushy at all for me to buy something and I ended up getting my gorgeous gown from them with the help of my consultant (wish I could remember her name, lol).

I think that your experience depends upon who you have to work with you and your personality... but just wanted to add my two cents because I had an amazing experience with them.

Thanks, that definitely gives me hope. I could always go back and ask to NOT have Gilda. I just wish she tried to work with me. She was honest alright, but I didn't mind. I need that. But I had 5 other girls with me, maybe that helps in the bad experience, keep it a small group...

The prices were unbeatable but the whole experience was bad =(

This sounds like the consultant I had, Sheryl. She's great & was totally honest w/ me about what's flattering, which I appreciated too. She's really good at finding styles that will look good on your body type. She kept pulling different dresses that I never would have tried on & some of them looked great - much better than I would've guessed. I haven't found the one yet but I'm guessing I'll go back pretty soon for round 2.
Thanks, girls, for the other suggestions! I'm pretty new to NY so it's nice to know about the other stores you've had luck at.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
