I'm going to agree with many of the posts here. First, it is not as simple as buying a really good camera and sticking someone behind the camera. That's taking pictures, which is a long way away from being a photographer.

We originally were going to use the resort photographer. The photos weren't bad, but they weren't great either. But, we didn't realize we had any option. We then went to a local wedding showcase/event, and talked to some photographers there, and looked at thier work. They put the resort photographer to shame, at least in our opinion. And, the photobooks that they include in thier packages were gorgeous. It would make the differnece between my photos sitting on a shelf and being displayed on our coffee table. And, we realized that local photographers would travel to destination weddings. I then started my research. I looked at scores of photographers websites, and talked to four photographers, before I settled on the one we chose.

We tripled our budget, but after getting our engagment photos back. I have absolutely no regrets.

I agree that showing your FI pictures that friends have taken against photos from either here or from actual photographer websites will hopefully help show him why you may want to spend more on your photographer.

I'm glad that I never had to prove that point. Jeff and I both dabble (and that is the best description I can use in photography) so quality pictures were important to both of us, and when we compare what we would get through the resort photographer and what we would get from the photographers we were considering there was no debate given the quality difference.

I definitely do not think you are being a bridezilla. You do not want to regret your photos every time you look at them.

It's really a personal preference and honestly you pay for quality. Do you know of any family or friends who would be willing to do your photography for you? Like an amateur photographer or anything? That could be an option too if you're really keeping an eye on your budget. Also do a priority list and see where your photography ranks on your list. There are plenty of threads on this like everyone else mentioned so it's def worth a search :0)

Best of luck!

Like your fiance, mine couldn't see why I was willing to pay so much for pictures alone. But once I explained to him how much it meant to me to have great pictures, he finally went along with it :)

Since our DW is only about two hours away, I put an ad out on CraigsList in that area, looking for a photog. I stated clearly what I wanted and how much I was willing to pay, and explained that we were on a budget. I got a ton of responses; some great, some not so great. After about two and a half weeks, I finally got the response I was looking for: a photog who was just my style, had an awesome portfolio and was willing to work within in my budget!

Anyway, I booked her for 3 hours and she quoted me for less than $200, including hi-res copies of the pictures on CD :)

For me, the pictures were the most important thing other than actually being married. They are all you will have left when the wedding is over and as your memories start to fade. So, our photographer was well worth the money. She cost almost the same amount as our entire trip and we don't regret it.

I completely agree that amazing pictures will be well worth the price and in 20 years when we don't even remember how much it cost, we can look back on all of them a be happy with what we have.

We went with Del Sol Photography Del Sol Photography Blog and I know we are going to so so so pleased.

Thanks for the words of encouragement and advice.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
