Gift opening etiquette?

Recommended Posts

Hi Ladies- I have an etiqutte question. We have received about 5 gifts so far in the mail. Our weddding is in October, and we sent our invites out in April with a June 1st RSVP. We opened them as we received them, until someone at work told me we shouldn't open gifts if the person sending them will be coming to my bridal shower. She told me that I should bring all the gifts I got in the mail to the shower. This seems a little crazy to me since the boxes we have been getting are HUGE. Also, why would someone mail the gift to US if they plan on coming to the shower, wouldn't they mail it to themself and bring it?

So far, some of the gifts have been from guests who RSVP'd no, and will not be coming to the shower. So that takes care of that, but yesterday we received a gift from a friend whi IS coming to the wedding and is invited to the shower. What is the proper way to handle that siutation? TIA.

I never heard of that either. I actually had people purposely mail me the gifts so i wouldnt have to lug them home form the bridal shower (big gifts) and it was easier for them not to lug it their too. My guests told me at my shower that's why they mailed them to me and i was really appreciative they did because i had a ton of stuff to take home already. i would keep opening as they come in and i would even send a thank you card out right away so the person knows you got the gift safely and appreciate the fact they mailed it to you.

I've never heard of that either! Why bring gifts all the way to the shower jsut to bring them back? Besides, wedding gifts and shower gifts are different. You'll have people bring gifts for both occasions.

We've did receive one gift already (money) and I sent a thank-you right away. I think that's the proper thing to do.

How do you know if the gift you receive in the mail is a wedding gift or a shower gift?

We were told that it was a wedding gift. His great aunt wanted us to have it because she's not going too well and doesn't think she'll make it until our wedding (which is still 7 months away).

We we weren't told, I wouldn't really have known I guess. Seeing as there's no shower planned for my very near future, I guess I would have assumed that it was a wedding gift!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
