2 months away from the big day...& i just got laid off

so yesterday, 15 minutes before my out time, my boss calls me into her office and tells me to close the door. i was so scared because i had gone to her office 15 minutes prior and i overheard her tell somebody "please know that the reason for you being laid off is because of the economy." i didn't know who she was talking to because she had her door closed...until i saw my other co-worker walking out of her office and her eyes were all red. my co-worker has been with that company for over 12 years!

so while i was sitting in my boss' offfice with the door close, i wait for her to get off a phone call and finally she tells me "there's no easy way to say this so i'm just going to say it...you're being laid off." at first i was like okay...what can we do. but then she started crying and she made me cry! my boss, the general manager for the station and the VP of human resources have always been very supportive of me and have always helped me with anything that i needed. my boss said "please know that this was not my decision at all. and quite frankly i'm glad because i could not have been able to choose between any of you."

i told her i knew that and i knew i was just a number to the company, but that if it made her feel any better, i was glad that i had the support of all of them. they even went as far as shopping my resume around to the company and see if they could find another job for me. nothing of course was available so, they are still looking for other opportunities for me! OMG...the thing that made me cry was all the support i was receiving!!!

i think that the best outcome in this is that i have all these people backing me up. i would have never imagined that i would have so much support! i mean i knew my family and friends and FI were going to be there for me. but my coworkers and supervisors - they have no obligation to that! i feel so lucky in such a terrible situation. i've taken the bad news and turned it around into something positive. i KNOW i will be fine and i know i will find the right job for me! i just really hope it happens!!

thanks for listening.

good luck to anyone who is going through the same situation. know that we will overcome this and will be even better off. head up!! smile03.gif

Hi Isaura,

I know exactly what you're going through, as I was laid off in March, and I know that there are others on the fourm who are going through this as well.

Getting laid off is one of the worst feelings ever, and it brings out so many emotions in us....some that we didn't even realize. When you think about it, work is your second home. you're there (generally) 5 days a week, 8 hours a day...so that's 40 hours minimum with your with your second family...we grow strong attachments and bonds to the people we work with, as well as the sense of satisfaction and enjoyment we get from what we actually do (hopefully), as well as the feeling of independence and success.

I bawled for days after I got laid off, I felt embarassed, ashamed, angry...and I got laid off the day after I booked my resort....

take a few days to mourn your loss...and it is a loss...and then figure out your next steps...resumes, job search strategies, etc.

if there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

I'm so sorry you have been hit by this....it's wonderful the support you're getting and I can totally see having bawled my ass off too! You'll weather this storm! There are jobs out there. It's not always easy finding them, especially in a specific field. But just trust ...things are gonna be ok! It sounds trite and a little silly, but I honestly do believe that everything in life happens to get us to the next step of where we are supposed to be.

FH got laid off two weeks before Christmas. Yea....two weeks before Christmas, with 4 kids. Luckily, we had already done the gift shopping and had a little to fall back on. The glorious, whopping 60% of his income unemployment had to coast us for the following 3 months.

This is another reason my mother thinks we're insane for getting married in Mexico; the uncertainty of the economy and just what will be happening in our lives at this point next year. But, like I told her, there are always those factors. You never know what's coming and you can't live your life not planning anything out of fear. We're being as smart as we can about it, paying for everything along the way so that it's absorbed into our monthly expenses instead of left to be handled in one massive lump sum at the end. I've literally forced myself to just forget about using credit cards PERIOD.

I'm sorry, it's always hard at first, but know that the market is horrible right now. I was laid off my day job about 5 weeks ago and my husband is still working for the company so of course we worry about him getting laid off as well.

Now is the time to embrass the change and maybe explore something you have wanted to and just couldn't for whatever reason. Everything happens for a reason, just remember that. :-)

Hey I just wanted to say that I know how you feel...I got laid off shortly before the holidays and it was awful. I also got engaged around the same time (by surprise) and I couldn't tell if everyone was more shocked by my engagement or by the fact that I was no longer working with my company (which was a HUGE part of my life)...

So much change is hard to deal with. To top it off my FI and I moved across the country so that he could go back to school, so now I am searching for employment *still* in a new and unfamiliar place where I don't really know anyone!

Just remember that when God closes a door he opens a window. And if a shoe doesn't fit, that is not your shoe haha. Okay I will stop. Best wishes on the employment and bridal front, this too will pass :)

"Just remember that when God closes a door he opens a window." I love this!

I am so sorry that you are going through this now while you are trying to plan a wedding. So not fair! But KC had it right and I am sure you will find something soon! Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers!

I got laid off last month, but it doesn't take effect until September because I'm a teacher. I've been told they'll be re-hiring most of us (there were 18 of us) but I may not hear anything until July or August so not knowing is tough. Like others have said, everything happens for a reason!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
