First Dance Timing?

Recommended Posts

Hi - I tried searching for this and couldn't find anything...

When did you or when are you planning to have your first dance?

Was it right after you got introduced and before the food was served OR after everyone ate and before cake cutting to get the dancing started?

I see pros and cons for both options and would love to get everyone's opinions

Thanks!!

I love that you asked this question Yael! I've been wondering the same thing. I think I'm going to go with the second option because I think that doing it before dinner is kind of stilted. I like the option of doing it after dinner to kick start the dancing. But then where does the father-daughter dance come in? Is it weird to do the father-daughter dance right after dinner and then have your new hubbie come and take you from your father for the first dance, and then open up the floor to dancing? To me that seems like the most seamless, logical, and non-awkward way to do it but I don't know if that's overdoing it for the guests, to make them watch two emotional dances in row.

Curious to hear the opinions and experiences of others!

- Jen

We did it after everyone eat... We didn't have any of the other traditional dances (Father/Daughter, etc...).

We decided to have it after the dinner to get eveyone on the dance floor and it worked out great... Some of our guest felt the pressure not to leave us hanging (in the dance floor by ourselfs) :0)

I don't really see any cons with doing it after you are introduce thou... Either way should be fine!

I'm really having a difficult time trying to organize this as well. We are having a SMALL wedding.Only about 8 guests so we will be having our dinner at one of the a la carte restaurants. Is it weird to have the dances in the restaurant? i was thinking after supper before cutting the cake. But I feel it might be awkward? Any opinions....?

  • 3 weeks later...

I just went to a small wedding (~20 people) and they just had a dinner reception in a small room of a restaurant. After the dinner and cake and everything, they got up and danced to their song, and then we joined them in the tiny little space. It was fine! I actually don't think they even planned to do it because it wasn't announced or anything, but it worked out well and didn't seem awkward.

I think we are going to do it after dinner as I have heard that sometimes the party never actually gets going unless you start it off. I suppose it depends on how many people are joining you and if you want a party atmosphere after the dinner? And also if you are having your reception in a private/public area. Also we are not doing the father/daughter or other dances. My MOH has planned to get everyone up to join us after our song for a boogie :). We are having a private reception on the beach, so no small restaurant spaces to worry about :)

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
