Is it normal to not want a wedding shower?

Recommended Posts

I am so torn on this! It's not that I'm extremely against the idea...I just really can't picture myself having a traditional wedding shower and being the center of attention while everyone watches me open gifts I don't really want.

My FI was previously married and has amazing cookwear and we just bought a house and thus have already picked up a lot of the big stuff. I know we can always find stuff to register for, or replace old things, but I also feel guilty having people spend MORE money on me since a lot of them are already throwing down big bucks just to come.

Does anyone else feel this way?? Anyone have ideas for a non-traditional shower? I was talking to my mom about maybe just going to the beach and drinking margaritas and having a "girls day" to celebrate getting married...but she is sure that the people we'd invite will bring gifts anyway, and thinks I might as well get what I want instead of just getting random things.

I also thought about registering for things to do on my honeymoon, but we're only staying 5 days. i like the idea registering for help with some of the wedding costs...but i cant bring myself to do it because then they're literally spending money and giving me money and i really feel weird about it!

I can't wait to hear other girls thoughts on this!

Hi Josie - I specifically told my MOH to not throw me a wedding shower :) I also didnt want my friends to spend more money on me and all my friends and family are spread literally all over the world so i wouldnt even have that many ppl So I dont think its weird at all!

Instead - which i was totally surprised and LOVED was that she and my close friends threw me a lingerie shower the morning after my bachlorette party - it was great!

I agree! I have also asked that we do not get thrown a shower -if they listen that will be another thing. My guests are all strewn across north america and everyone is already spending enough to come to our wedding in mexico, not to mention I have 16 gfs coming to vegas in july for my bachelorette party, that I don't want them spending anymore!

The proposal story is SO sweet! :)

I had two showers and it was a little awkward being the center of attention and opening a bunch of gifts!

That said, I LOVE getting people gifts for their showers and recently threw one for a friend :) It's so fun to do something for those you love! Creating a theme, sending out cute invites, getting decorations, thinking of surprises for the special bride-to-be...

Although a shower is a shower of gifts, there's a lot of love too! Cheesey, I know. Remember that they don't have to, but they want to! Sit back and enjoy :)

Totally understandable if you don't want to do it. we threw one for a friend a month before the wedding because most of the people that came to the shower wasn't going to the DW. We did the strip/pole dancing class then met for drinks 2 hours later that night we had fun she appreciated it and she received mostly lingrie gifts. It's your choice and people will sometimes still bring gifts.

A non-traditional idea: a cookbook recipe shower. Whoever is hosting the shower gets a scrapbook and has a page for each guest. On each person's page, there will be a message and special recipe for the newlywed couple to try. It can be a potluck and each guest can bring a sample of their recipe.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
