Tammy- this is quite amazing!!! I planted for the first time ever but wayyy beginner compares to your talents.

Hi erika,

 

this is my first year gardening as well...lots of stuff to know but so relaxing and i really believe in the bonuses that we will receive from it (healthy, delicious food, grown locally...no fule needed to transport it...composting instead of going into landfill).

 

what do you grow?

Since we are in a town home I did 4 potted plants. 2 decoartive with flowers, 1 as an herb garden including italian flat leaf parsley, sweet basil, greek oregano, and cilantro. The final pot I did a hybrid tomato plant right now I the name is totally escaping me. I will have to go look in a min.

Okay I just ran out in the rain to check it out LOL. It is Porter's DarK Cherry Hybrid. Simliar size and shape to roma tomatoes. The take longer but do well in hot an dry climates like Colorado.

Oooh, neat Tammy. I'll definitely add it to my reader. Cute garden! Mine is suffering. I have a major rabbit problem (stupid woods in my backyard). I've tried just about everything short of shooting them with a pellet gun (Brian's idea that I've veteod). I think my only option is to put up a wire fence which I didn't want to do because astethically, they aren't the prettiest things ever....

 

At least it's still early in the season so I have some time to work it out!

erika, i read that the dark cherry tomatoes are delish and quite prolific so you should get alot of them. also, you may want to try stupice next year as it is bigger than cherry (regular tomatoe size about 4-6 oz), an heirloom, and i heard it can take quite a beating and does well in containers (mine is in an 8 gallon container). i also LOVE my herb garden. it has basil, chives (which you really should add...i sue them ALL the time in eggs, potato salad, etc.) thyme, sage, mint. i am growing minto for mojitos BUT if you decide to grow it, be careful, it spreads fast so you should put it in its own pot so it doesnt take over ans smother the other palnts.

i read that you can make a cayenne pepper solution and pour it around your plants and it deters rabbits. some people claim it is cruel as it causes the rabbits to have itchy eyes but people swear it works. also, i think if you use either bone or blood meal, it is also supposed to be a deterrent but i forget which one it is.

Nice garden! We haven't tried a veggie garden yet, but are addicted to working in our perinnial gardens, we just ordered 50 more plants and shrubs after visiting the Mn landscape arboretum on thursday night! I guess we are going for the nicest acre on the block! We love landscaping, we even go to our family's homes and help them, ha! We also have a herb garden that does well every year.

 

So shade gardens are the toughest to grow... I have a pretty good list of perinnials that do well in shade if anyone is interested.

Whoa, I butchered the word "aesthetic" in my last post! Gotta start proofreading.

 

I haven't tried the cayenne pepper solution, but I do remember reading about it once. I feel bad about hurting the poor things, but they are seriously little terrors and there are a lot! We can't fence in the back side of our property which opens up into the woods and that's where they are all coming from. I've tried both bone and blood meal and that hasn't worked

 

And it's not just rabbits, we have a raccoon as well that destroys everything!

 

Do you use anything to repel bugs? I know that's going to be my next problem.

Very cool and informative blog! Hopefully we can move out of DC soon, and leave the fog behind us, so that maybe I can plant something too. I bought a basil plant from Trader Joe's last year and it died.
