My wedding is cancelled because of the Swine flu! Where should I go?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I just found out that my wedding in Mexico is cancelled. Unfortunatly we have to choose an alternative destination. We have the choice of Jamaica, Cuba or the Dominican Republic. I heard the Dominican is dirty outside of the resorts and that they do not have a garbage collector system so people throw their garbage everywhere. Also that some resorts do not let you leave their resort area. This area is so beautiful though!

Any preferences or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as we have little time. One month till we are suppose to leave! Thank-you so much for any comments you have!

I have been to both Cuba and the Dominican and I can tell personally that both places are beautiful. The beaches are wonderful, maybe even nicer than Mexico. What I remember from the DR is that it was nice. The people that live on these island are generally dirt poor. And because of that they tend to take care of everything so it lasts a little longer. Yes in some places it is dirty but we have that problem here. As far as the people they are very nice. Cuba holds a special place in our hearts so I could go on and on about the people and the places. They are a special people that thrive under adversity. Always smiling, always welcoming especially to children. They are a warm and gracious people. They do their country a service with the attitude they have. Many of us could smile while living like they do. But both countries have their advantages. One of the reasons we chose Cuba was because of how easy it is to get married there. No jumping thru hoops. Its all pretty simple. Good Luck

We LOVED Punta Cana. We left the resort to go to a bar in town, and had no problems. The area is absolutely gorgeous ... but it is a poor country, so you have to keep that in mind. The resorts are glorious, but living conditions for most locals are modest at best.

We were married at Paradisus Punta Cana and walked to the little market outside of the resort and to a local bar.

We honeymooned at Paradisus Palma Real and walked off resort to a restaurant and shops as well.

We are returning to Punta Cana for our 2nd anniversary and many of our guests are coming back with us. We absolutely LOVE Punta Cana.

I've got no personal experience with any of the places but from reading all the wonderful reviews here they all are amazing fantastic places to go. my choice would be Jamaica because there are off- resort excursions that sound like fun, plus it just sounds so fun in Jamaica and beautiful too :)

so sorry you had to cancel but wherever you rebook it will be just as amazing, you just gotta get used to the idea :) keep us posted!

Just to add to the comments...I've been to both Cuba & the Dominican and the food in general was much better in the Dominican. If you have any American guests going with you they can have a difficult time getting into Cuba. Just some thoughts... =) We had our flights cancelled 3 days before flying out and have changed our wedding to July in the Dominican, my thoughts are with you as I know how tough & challenging it is to make these alternate arrangements at the last minute! Good luck with you decision making!

I know you're facing LOTs of decisions that need to be made quickly. There are some excellent suggestions already put forward above, and I'd like to throw in my "vote" for the DR.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you have, or help in any way I can, if that's the destination you choose.

Best of luck with everything....remember to get enough sleep (or as much as possible) to help deal with it all. works miracles for me.

We have decided on the Dominican Republic. We are going to stay at Majestic Elegance Punta Cana. It is an amazing resort so we are pretty happy. The worry is starting to be lifted off of my shoulders!

Nice choice JodJ! Congrats on finding a new resort and I'm sure that everything will be wonderful. My g/f was supposed to be married in the Mayan Riveria the first week of May and it too was canceled due to H1N1 (aka swine flu). She regrouped and was able to change to DR for the same date as her Mexico wedding. She has since returned and says that she had a wonderful wedding in Punta Cana.

Congrats and we can't wait to hear all about it!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
