Bringing dogs back to US from Cabo

So Cain and I are working on brinking back two dogs from Cabo to the US. No were not keeping them, lol. They will actually go to a local shelther group, they are special need dogs that we feel we would be able to help more in the US.

So we checked with American Airlines about transporting, and they said as long as it's not 85 degrees or warmer. I'm not sure how this is going to affect things since we have a layover in Dallas. Does anyone, by some wild chance know anything about this type of thing?

I assume this will be in June after the wedding? The odds of it being 85 or over in Dallas, TX are probably pretty high in June. A lot of airlines actually just don't allow at all the transporting of dogs in the cargo hold during summer months. You run a high risk of them deciding they will not allow you to transport the dogs after all. I assume these are larger dogs that have to go in cargo? If they're not and can fit in a carry on that will fit under the seat, then it shouldn't matter what the outside temperature is but you do have to reserve a space for the dogs since they only allow a certain number of pets in the cabin per flight. Oh, and if you do take the dogs, their pet crate will count against your baggage allowance (so unfair.)

Yeah their larger dogs, Hmm I wonder if Cain's Ma can fly back with them since she's leaving earlier in the day. And I didn't know it would count as our luggage, that may not work then. Might for his Ma, but we will already be at our max.

You may want to double-check with American Airlines about the luggage allowance. We flew our dog from GA to CA on Delta and even though we had to pay to have the dog in cargo hold, their policy is that it counts as luggage. I mean, if you pay for the dog to fly, why should that count against your allowance? It doesn't even go in the same space! But anyways, yes, the temperature at any of your layover points does matter. While it never really gets hot up in the air, you never know what might happen on the ground, how long they'll be on a hot tarmac, etc... Do you know if you'll have to do anything special to get the dogs through customs?

You will also have to get a "Certificado de Salud" (health certificate) from a local vet for each dog. Thsi will have to be presented to the airline and customs for the US. This certificate has a time limit. I think 48 hrs. So you have to get it right before you leave.

Tammy, we have to ship one of our puppies to Florida, we are using Continental, they keep the animals in an air conditioned area, so they told us that the temperature didn't matter because they have air conditioning for the animals.

The place we would be pulling the dogs from in Cabo said they would handle all the required paperwork to get through customs, and we already have someone set up here in MI to take the dogs when they arrive. Wow sounds like this is going to be a headache...

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
