Deadly swine flu virus in Mexico

I have 40 people total scheduled and we had 36 show up. Some of our guests were worried and got Tamiflu from their doctors. Now that I am down here, I feel there is NOTHING to worry about. I think the media has put such a hype on the flu and it seems silly, in my opinion. We had a WONDERFUL wedding and things could not have gone better. The resorts are empty so you get the resort to you and your guests-major bonus!
My husband and I will be in the Cancun area for another week and we don't plan on cutting any of our trip short.
I hope this helps some of you brides who are getting married soon. :) Good luck :)
Thanks Kristin for the encouraging post! Congratulations on getting married! I'm so happy you went along with your plan and had a great time.

Good News!!!!

The H1N1 flu outbreak in Mexico has peaked and is in decline, Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova said Sunday.

According to Cordova, the peak of the epidemic occurred between April 23 and 28.

While countries around the world continue to report new cases, Mexico is experiencing a decline in serious flu cases, with fewer patients being admitted to hospital, Cordova said.

"The evolution of the epidemic is in its declining phase," Cordova told a news conference on Sunday.

i am so annoyed at employers telling guests they can't return to work for a week upon their return from mexico. i'm fairly certain that forcing an employee to take a week off unpaid has got to be illegal, but i can't seem to find anything to verify either way. any labor lawyers out there?

the really ridiculous thing is one groomsman who was told this works in NYC--where there are FAR more cases (hundreds?) than there are in cancun (zero) at this point! thankfully, he won't lose out on pay because they are allowing him to work from home that week, but unfortunately FI's aunt is going to have to cancel because her mandatory week off will be unpaid. ugh.

Anyway, just wanted to share some details of the PV airport and what was happening there.

As I reported earlier in the week we did go into downtown PV one night, I think Wednesday and all was fine, sure there were a few wearing masks but really nothing out of the ordinary at all.

At the airport yesterday, before you were allowed to proceed to your airline check-in counter ALL passengers had to fill out an extra form. the form basically said who are you, where have you been, where are you going, how do you feel (body aches, fever, yadda yadda). Then you got into a line and had to have your temperature taken by a doctor that they had there. now don't freak by this...it really was nothing at all! the thermometer was one they just put close to your forehead and the temp popped out on it within seconds. the dr. wrote your temp down and then you had to take the form to another lady who reviewed everything (very quickly mind you) and then stamped it and sent you on your marry way. this whole extra process took us an extra 10 minutes max when we checked in.

so when DH and I arrived at the airport we were directed where to go to get this extra form right away and it really was easy and smooth. however as we were then waiting in line for our airline to check in, DH noticed there were a TON of people without the form (which you had to have to check in) and nobody was telling you needed the form until you reached the ticket counter. so he proceeded to go down our entire line and the one next to ours (all americans of course) and make sure they had their form because he felt bad that people were waiting in line and they didn't have their form and he didn't want them to wait and then be sent to the back. I just laughed at him while he was doing this...it was good for us actually because about 6 people that were ahead of us had to get out of line so our wait was less!

so the airport was pretty busy yesterday and as we checked in and walked to our gate I noticed that really not a lot people were wearing masks, including the airline employees. our guess was that maybe 1 in every 40 or 50 had a mask on. on our flight as people were getting on board I counted 5 people (out of 132 which the plane held) that had the masks on. what I for the life of me couldn't understand is that these people had their masks on in the terminal and when they got on the plane but then once they sat down they took the masks off! correct me if i am wrong but doesn't that defeat the purpose? anyway that was just odd to me

so we are back and really I just wanted to report that all is fine in mexico, we had no problems at all!

i do get to stay home tomorrow too! my work is making me...crazy i know, as there are still no confirmed cases in Jalisco and Nayarit (where we came from in Mexico) but yet there are at least 2 in Denver! whatever...i am not going to put up a stink about being able to stay home! wink.gif I have wedding reviews and pics to post!
Andi - I am sooo happy y'all had a great time!! bunny_4.gif

BUT, I am concerned about the exit screening from the PV airport!!!!! As you know, I have Lyme, and one of the symptoms is random FEVERS!!!! AHHHHH!!!! And of course I have body aches all the time (the bones from my lower back down to my feet HURT quite often - just another fun Lyme symptom! cheesy.gif) I don't mind fudging the truth on the symptoms they ask you to report, but holy hell - I am scared of them detaining me because of a fever!!!

Does anyone know if there is a particular "fever" temp which will cause concern?? Or, say, a fever over 101.0 is what they are looking for, etc... I normally have mild fevers, but they rarely go over 99.6, and are generally 99.0-99.4 Also, my MOH ALWAYS has super bad allergies - in fact I'm ordering her a button from CafePress.com that says this:
Click the image to open in full size. wink.gif LOL But she is always sneezing and stuff, just super duper sensitive to allergy stuff... and she's worried about being forced to stay there (she could not afford to miss time off work).

K, I was seriously ok until I read this... now I'm concerned. sad.gif I'm already a tad concerned that when I go see my new Lyme doc tomorrow he will freak out of me for going... but trying to not put that thought out there!!!

Eeek, I told Martin we need to get back to work on our Visionary Boards STAT! lol

Also - I can't believe United is canceling flights to MX! Well, I guess I can believe it, but wth? Are they canceling all flights?? Me and my guests are all flying on AA as I far as I know, and they haven't said anything.... oh please, please, please do not do that! MX's economy is already suffering horribly. Let those of us who want to go, "rain or swine", GO! Grrrrrrr... kay, that's my vent for the day! muscle.gif

Just wanted to say thanks to all the ladies posting from Cancun and after just returning. I wanted to say that FI and I leave tomorrow morning. We only had 3 people cancel, one couple (not flu related) and a single (wacky b/c she went to NYC), they were fortunately all "non-essential." We feel really fortunate that everyone seems to be excited about the trip. I don't know that I'll be as great as Andi with posting from Mexico but I'll try to get something posted when we get there to let you all know how it is. Good luck everyone!

Hi smf, well, I am seeing a brand new doc tomorrow so I have no idea if he'll freak out on me for wanting to go - and if he does feel strongly that way, I'm not sure if he'd write the note, ya know?? That was my original plan. And I have a friend in MX City who has offered to translate it for me just in case...

Well ... first of all I want to say how sorry I am for all of the "Mexico" brides who have had to deal with this stupid pig flu for the past couple of weeks. This is NOT the way any of us wanted to be stressing about such an important time in our lives.

We are scheduled for Dreams Tulum on June 30th and I'm just so stressed out and need to vent.

I am soooo up for continuing on with our plans but we have a problem with it. We both have kids from our previous marriages (5 total - my 3 and his 2) and we simply will not have the wedding without all 5 of them there.

Well, my finance's ex-wife is ... well ... a total b#%$&! She first refused to sign the necessary papers for the kids' passports (finally did after getting her parents involved) and then said the permission to travel form we gave her "wasn't official looking enough" because it didn't have their passport numbers on there (even though she knew she had JUST given us the passport paperwork) ... finally got that signed ... and now this flu.

My kids' schools are all closed due to the flu (we have confirmed cases in our county *sigh*) but his kids' school is still open. He was talking to his ex on the phone Wednesday night (they only communicate via email for the past 2 years so she is making this a HUGE deal and insisted he call her) because she wasn't sure if she was going to "let him" bring the kids here around my kids because we live in a county with confirmed cases (she lives 20 MINS AWAY!!!!!!!!! Crazy "B" and mine haven't left the house yet hers were still going to school everyday!!!!!!!!!! And we both work from home and she and her boyfriend have been going to work around TONS of people! Geez this stupidity makes me mad! LOL).

And then the nightmare began. The whole Mexico trip came up. Note: We haven't told her (or his kids - they're 7 and 9) that we're getting married in Mexico ... we just refer to it as a "family vacation" or who knows what she'll pull. She started with, "You aren't still going to Mexico in June are you?" Well, fiance felt put on the spot and just said, "No. Well, at this point we aren't going unless something changes."

I couldn't believe it! I couldn't even be mad at him because he was just trying to tell her what she wanted to hear and get off the phone. But now I fear that IF everything is still a "go" with the airlines and such ... that she might try to stop us last minute.

Add to that most of fiance's family is being totally negative and telling us we better not go to Mexico and that we better not be taking the kids down there. These are all the same family members who AREN'T GOING by the way ... and who also made a huge deal out of the "drug wars" too.

I just don't know what to do. I really want to get married at Dreams Tulum on June 30th! I don't want to be stressing the whole time before that date that someone/something is going to stop us from going. I'm just not ready emotionally to look for a different destination (not to mention the money we'll lose for travel for the 7 of us).

To add to this my gorgeous boarding pass wedding invitations arrived yesterday and I just had a total break down! I'll post pics later - a HUGE thanks to our very own Jessica with The Stylish Scribe for making them for us!

Ladies ... thanks for letting me vent and for all of the encouraging posts on here that are so helpful ... especially for those of us who are trying not to freak out about the stupid pig flu. *huGs* Suzanne

Jacylinda - thanks hug2.gif I can't believe I am freaking out... I seriously need to take a chill pill!! Hell, I think in this case a mid-day glass of wine is TOTALLY JUSTIFIED!!!! LOLOLOL

I sent an email to Tammy (our TA) asking the questions, and I guess that's about all I can do that's under my control for now!

Then, I think I'll get Martin to join me in a mid-day "anti-swine" glass of wine (haha, that rhymes... lol cheesy.gif), and then finish my doctor's packet and then work on our Visionary board, and then RELAX ~ we rented Bride Wars, hopefully that will be funny and take our minds off this b.s.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
