Deadly swine flu virus in Mexico

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know that most news I've read does highlight her chronic medical conditions. The lead sentence in the article on msnbc.com says "that Texas officials say a woman with underlying chronic health conditions died earlier this week". Plus, based on the normal flu - people die - as previous articles have pointed out. I am still optimistic that this will all pass soon.

Also, not sure if this helps anyone, but one of our guests is an accomplished infectious disease researcher. He's still planning to attend our wedding in Cabo in June! He says that based on what they know about this current form of the virus, it's milder than normal flu and not as virulent -- he said "I'll be there without any reservations".

Here is snips from the email FI's uncle sent us.

I went yesterday to see my doctor and nurse that I see when I travel outside of the United States. They offer pretravel medical consultation on any foreign destinations to be visited on any relevant disease and travel risk issues, and when indicated, they offer the immunization shots for the area that a person may visit.

They do not see a significant risk at this time to travel to Maroma, Mexico or Cancun. They are on the Center for Disease Control website every day watching events around the world for a variety of issues. They do recommend what they have always recommended to me on foreign travel. Wash hands frequently, use anti-bacteria hand wash, and watch how you eat. It is safe to eat food that has been cooked, boiled, or food that you peel yourself, (i.e.., bananna's). Care should be taken on eating fresh fruit prepared by others. These guidelines have applied on every trip to areas where people may experience stomach problems.

The current flu of concern involves mainly aches, coughing, and high fever. If your doctor recommends, you may want to take Tamaflu (Rx) for the flu and Cipro (Rx) for stomach issues. They also recommend taking Ibupropin.

Both the Doctor and nurse stated that we should stay informed but plan to go ahead with confidence. We are planning on going and enjoying ourselves.

I can give no one absolute guarantees. I have been to Russia four times on mission trips and usually a few people overdo it and get sick. Cipro does great.

*Hope this helps some of you. The death in Texas isn't going to help any of us BUT the most recent things I have read say things in regards to the flu slowing down now and possible raring its head in the fall/winter flu season.

MarieSam - if you read the "small" print on the same person on msnbc.com, you will notice that she had "other underlying health issues". Don't get worried or upset over this. Again the flipping media! GRRRRRR!!!!!!

WEDDING UPDATE #2:

PLAN B: As the wedding is quickly approaching, we will have to make a decision soon. If by this Friday, May 8, if the Coast Guard has not changed their policy regarding travel to Mexico, we will have to pursue our Plan B: Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

GRAND PALLADIUM RESORT: The all-inclusive Grand Palladium Resort is also located in Punta Cana, and has agreed to honor our room rates and wedding plans for the same date. The resort has 4 sections (Bavaro, Punta Cana, Palace and Turquesa) and is just as fun and beautiful as the one in Mexico. Therefore the only change would be to your flights. Link to Resort website.

FLIGHTS: We chose Mexico because of it's central location and low fares, so unfortunatly in changing to Punta Cana, flight duration would be longer and flights do cost more. However this is our next best option to still have or dream destination wedding.
There are two airports in the Dominican Republic.
1. Punta Cana (PUJ): located about 45 minutes from the resort. The most tropical airport we have ever seen!
2. Santo Dominto (SDQ): located about 3 hours from the resort. Beautiful and historic city. Typically fares to this airport are cheaper.
*We are currently researching shuttle options to the resort.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: We recently traveled to Punta Cana this January and loved it. With the turquoise water and white sandy beaches covered in palm trees, it is one of the most beautiful places we have ever been. We are confident it will be just and fun and nice as Mexico. Hi Hanna,

Just so you know we vacationed at the Palladium in the DR last year and considered it one of our best vacations ever!!!! I have tons of pics and lists of great things to do. One of the finest resorts we have ever been to!!! Let me know if you end up deciding on that route and need any info!

As for myself we are heading to the Barcelo Solymar in Cuba, and so excited. Not my 9 month planned wedding but still a wedding! I also wanted to let all you girls know mexicanweddingphotos.com refunded all our money deposit (unlike our travel agency) and I wanted to give them praise for being so understanding!!! And thank all the girls who gave me advice on Cuba.

Without this forum I would be lost!!! TY ALL smile03.gif

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
