Deadly swine flu virus in Mexico

Recommended Posts

I want to spend my day crying. Despite all the reassuring articles and the knowledge that much of this is sensationalized, FI and I sat down last night and had to make some hard decisions. We have a 4 year old, who we could not imagine getting married without him there. However, he was very sick as an infant with RSV and pneumonia and because of that he is very suseptible to EVERYTHING and when he gets sick he gets it worse than other people might. As much as I truly want my wedding to be in Mexico at the resort that I chose from day one, I would never forgive myself if something happened to my son. And even though there are positive articles and the chances are slim, we just can't do it as parents. So I spoke with my TA last night and she will be contacting me with new destinations for the same dates and I will be moving my wedding. With only 2 weeks to go I am soooo stressed, so sad over all the planning I have done, the personalized items, the little touchs of a mexican theme, that now seem meaningless. I know I am making the right decision but I still can't help but be so damn sad and mad over this whole thing. And FI, who rarely shares his emotions, just sent me a text that said "I feel so sad today baby." This sucks!

That being said I am now starting to get paranoid that they will spread the travel retrictions to other areas in the Carribean if this damn flu keeps going.

Hang in there ladies
OH no! dont jynx it!! if that happens than mexico brides wont even have the option of moving to another resort AND pretty much all BDW would be screwed!!!

We are scheduled to fly down May 29 for our June 5 wedding at the Grand Palladium. We are trying to stay positive and hopeful that this situation will continue to stabilize. Currently we have 45 guests scheduled, and the only cancellation so far is my sister in law and 2 month old baby – which I completely support since he is so young. My 2-yr old niece might not come as well, but depending on the severity of the situation. At least my brother said he would still come even if the kids and wife can't. Other than that, our guests have been supportive and optimistic. My father is flying from Japan, so hopefully they don't restrict his travel to Mexico. Unfortunatly he also has a layover in Mexico City, so if the airlines allow, will try to see about changing his itinerary. 3 of my bridesmaids/friends have a 6 hour layover in Mex City - and they are flying on Mexicana. As of now, they are only allowing changes through the beginning of May, but if they extend, will encourage them to try and change to direct flight to Cancun.

We are giving ourselves 2 more weeks before we make any sort of decisions, as this situation continues to change.

Plan B: Move to Punta Cana. I emailed the resort to see about back-up plan in the event of travel restrictions to Mexico, and Olga at the Grand Palladium was very supportive. Told me she would check on availability in Punta Cana and would not charge any penalties. I would rather try to switch locations first before we had to postpone to a later date. Although, another concern is if this continues to worsen, most people won’t want to sit on a flight for 3+ hours in re-circulated air with a serious flu breaking out.

Plan C: Postpone date. Since hurricane season is approaching, we would probably postpone to December/January. That is obviously what we don’t want to do, but we threw around the idea of trying to move it to California (where we used to live) or something like that, but trying to put together an entirely new wedding in 2 weeks doesn’t sound like the experience we want for our wedding. Not to mention, most places in Central California / Santa Barbara will be all booked up for June weddings..

All we can do is try to stay positive and create our back-up plans in the event the worst happens. I am very sorry to hear about the May brides that are having their weddings cancelled. I can only imagine what you are going through and I am glad we all have each other to talk to and come to for advice and support.

Admite gobernador sólo un caso de influenza estacional tipo "A" - Chetumal

This article from the local paper says that all 32 cases of suspected flu have been tested and are negative for Swine Flu. It states that only one case was positive for Type A influenza, which is seasonal flu and it was not Swine Flu. Here is the Babelfish translation:

CHETUMAL, MX. - The governor of Quintana Roo, Felix González Canto, I inform that in the State Capital I detect a case of influenza seasonal type " A" , I reiterate that at the moment they have not registered any pig case of influenza. " Of the 32 cases that have appeared in state 31 they gave negative and only one gave to positive to influenza seasonal type To, until the moment the organization is frees of influenza porcina" Felix González Canto in a press conference said that offered in Chetumal. With regard to the cases of influenza seasonal type " A" , in Quintana Roo 2 cases in 2006 were registered, in 2007 were 5, in 2008 2 cases were confirmed and in which a case only goes of the present year. I indicate that to its government this preparation to take care of cases of influenza pig, in case they are gotten to present/display. " We count on 100 doses medecines that are effective to fight influenza pig, in case it is gotten to present/display a case in the state will immediately be moving medecines to the place that is necesario". We are moving our wedding to another resort and currently working on finding a date that works for our guests. Regardless, we will be losing some guests since the new date may not work for everyone. Sigh.

One funny thing is that my FI and I will be taking our (non-refundable) European honeymoon BEFORE our wedding! We leave on May 11th!
I'm so sorry sad.gif We know that if for whatever reason *knock on wood* there was a travel ban to MX we would still take our kick-ass HM to Jamaica!!!

So, China and Russia refuse to import pork from the US and Mexico even though you can't contract the disease from eating pork. How funny is that?

For all of you that have been commenting on how the Swine Flu is less deadly than regular Flu, this is very true. However, about 90% of the regular flu deaths are of people over 65 with already severely weakened immune systems. Much of the concern with this strain is that normal, healthy people do not have no natural immunity to the disease and no one has had a vaccination, which is making more deadly than normal flu without treatment. While the normal flu sucks, most people can fight it off naturally with no problem, but what's worrying many is the potential for deaths in healthy adults who don't get treatment.

It's still not enough cause, in my opinion, for them to be canceling peoples weddings. People just need to be cautious, not crazy!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
