Customs in Mexico : an effort to gather the info in one thread !

Recommended Posts

I say to be safe, bring or make receipts for eveything you have. Their main concern is that you are not trying to sell things in Mexico. I'm having our things split b/t several people so hopefully it won't be an issue. That's the advice I've gotten from several brides as well as theknot.com and a DW planning guide. Also, to make sure that when you split things up, you split similar items up as well. So put a few oot bags, flipflops, etc in one suitcase instead of all of the bags in one, all of the flipflops in another, etc.

Hey Ladies,

I just went to Mexico for a site visit and we brought down all of our OOT bags. We had ALOT of crap so we needed 6 large suitcases to fit it all, so we split it between the 6 of us. (The FI, our parents, and me.) The people at customs were sooooo nice to us. They looked through our bags, asked for receipts, but really there were no problems.

Oh, and I let my dad do all the talking since he was like proud father of the bride who really had no clue about what he could carry into the country or where we were even staying, but he looked so touristy and honest that I'm sure they were like, how can we not trust this guy? It was kind of humorous to watch but I think it worked out well!

hey guys! i wanted to let you ladies know what happend to us- hopefully it'll help calm your nerves a little! :)

we had 4 bags & my dress- we checked 2, and my mom had the other 2 for us, and i carried on the dress.

we got red-lighted. the customs agent asked if 2 was all we had & i said yes (b/c i figured NO way would mom get red-lighted also). he opened the bags, looked through them quickly (they were our clothing and very little wedding stuff) and that was that. super easy.

mom goes through with her 2 bags & our 2 bags (1 my clothes, 1 ALL wedding) she also gets red-lighted. CRAP! but they were very nice, opened, poked around a little, asked her if she was coming down for a wedding- she said yes, they closed the bags, that's it.

they didn't ask for any receipts. good thing, because i had them, and trying to explain why i didn't claim the bags in the first place might have been tough.

the other important note to add here is that i had just about $300 worth of merchandise, and did not have OOT bag stuff. i think that if they saw some of that stuff they would have wanted receipits.

i did have:

24 raffia fans

50 plastic cups

20 wine toppers

30 4" starfish

happy packing! :)

We had so many luggages that they asked us if we had any gifts. I said we had 80 gift bags for our guests and I said NOT for resale. They let us pass. I think they were overwhelmed with all the other crap we had they just let it go. I honestly think just being nice and smiling helped a lot.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
