Legal Ceremony in US

Recommended Posts

I have been thinking about the pros and cons of being married internationally for a while so I called the clerks office here in Northwest Indiana. I was told that international weddings are recognized in the US, but that I would not be able to file our marriage certificate with them once I receive it. This unsettled me because if for any reason we needed to have our marriage verified (buying a home, credit reasons, health insurance), the inquiring party would have to go through Jamaican officials to get that information.

Basically, as far as my states clerk office is concerned, I would not be married on their records since they don't file the international license.

At this point we are considering a jp ceremony here and then have our ceremony officiated in Jamaica, and observe that wedding day. Has anyone else considered this as well?

Im sure that there are a ton of threads but I'm interested in whats going on now with this. Thanks!

Were you able to file your marriage license in your home state?
My question is this: If anyone had to check your marital status through the clerks office, are you technically listed as single?

How long did it take to receive the license?

I was going to say the same thing that Maureen said. I was thinking when they send me my marriage license from Jamaica....isn't that it? I won't need to go to any office here and file right? I mean I know I need it to change all my documents over but isn't that where it ends? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

BTW, Maureen I'm going to PM you. I have some questions about Evitas.

My question is can you send a copy of the certificate you get on your wedding day to be added to your new husbands health insurance, change your Drivers License ect... or do you need to wait for the one to come in the mail. If you do how long does that taekhuh.gif

We're getting married at the JP before too - just totally private me & him so we don't have to figure out all that other stuff. Nobody will know, and I was reassured that a symbolic ceremony looks exactly the same to all the guests, etc.

best of luck to you in whichever route you choose!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
