How did you decide?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm new here although I've been lurking for a few months now. My fiance Matt and I are pretty sure we want to get married in Mexico but we're having a REALLY hard time deciding where.

Originally, we thought Cancun or Riviera Maya because we LOVE the tropical climate but since we're from San Francisco, we thought it may be better and easier to do Cabo or Puerto Vallarta because they're so much closer. We're still not sure though because we really want those balmy evenings that come with a tropical climate and we're not sure Cabo or PV would be warm enough.

I love how Cabo is only about 2.5 hours away though, and it has SOOOOOOO many options compared to PV.

I would love your insight! How did you all pick Cabo for your wedding location? Did you have a hard time deciding between Cabo and somewhere else? If so, what were your other options and what were your priorities?

Oh yeah and for those of you who have been to Cabo, how cold does it get at night in May/June?

We need to narrow it down to an area soon since we would like to get married next May or June so I'm really looking forward to hearing about your experiences!

We were also looking at Cancun but then we decided on Cabo because it was closer. The flight from LAX is about 2 hours and I thought it would be easier for my guests to do a quick weekend trip. Some of my guests don't have too much vacation time so it would be difficult for some them to get time off.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jen! The fiance and I have never been anywhere in mexico but Cabo so I really dont have anything to compare it too. But when we visited Cabo for the first time last August we fell in love with the area and the people. We're also from the bay area and most of our family and friends are in LA and San Diego so Cabo is just really convenient travel wise. The last thing that finalized my decision was this website. Even after I knew I wanted a destination wedding in Cabo I had no idea where to start or how I would be able to plan a wedding in a different country. Finding this website has allowed me plan my dream wedding. I just came back from a site visit from Dreams and I cannot be happier with the vendors that I picked from the recommendations of other brides from BDW. Hope this helps. Happy Planning!

Hi Jen! First, congrats on your engagement.

I too live in SF. Here is how I decided. I knew I wanted to do Mexico and figured it should be on the pacific side b/c its' so much closer for our guests (mostly from CA and WA). I had been to both PV and Cabo and although both are fantastic, I wanted more of a tropical feel. Cabo is more desert. So I decided on PV.

To be honest, I was worried that I made the wrong decision b/c there seemed to be so many more options in Cabo than PV. But then we did our site visit and not only were all the locations awesome, but we fell in love with Playa Fiesta where we're going to be married.

Good luck. I did a lot of research on locations in PV, so if you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

My MoH had her wedding last year in the Mayan Riviera so we decided not to tdo the Mayan. I went to my TA and she gave me a TON of suggestions and brochures. We took them home and started looking. The place we kept coming back to was Cabo. The next step was the site visit. Cabo was so different form the Mayan that I knew it was the place for us. Don't get me wrong...I love the tropical feel of the Mayan but I didn't want to "copy" my MoH. Also, Cabo Wabo was Mike's selling point. Typical guy.

My Fiancée and I first visited Cabo when we were dating in college. We were 21 and looking forward to partying the entire trip. However, on our first night there we were surprised to find ourselves on the beach having the most romantic dinner ever. It was a warm night, the moon was full, and the waves were crashing against the rocks.

That was four years ago and we were too young to fully appreciate the romantic side of Cabo. We literally spent the rest of that trip partying and throwing back margaritas. But now I appreciate all of the elements Cabo has to offer. I think Cabo can be lots of fun, romantic, relaxing, and family friendly. I've visited many times, and we will be back in July before our wedding next year.

In my opinion Cabo is more fun than Maui, and more romantic and less hectic than Cancun. It's also very beautiful, and in a great location. We're from the Bay Area, and its about a 3 hour flight from us, and for my family on the East Coast, it takes about the same time to fly to Cabo as it does to fly to S.F. (approx. 5 hours.)

To sum it up Cabo has all of the elements we're looking for in a wedding location. So, good luck Jen on finding your perfect location!

This is exactly what I've been thinking and it's funny because the one place I found in PV from all my research that looked like somewhere we'd like to get married was Playa Fiesta! After adding everything up from the pricing sheets he sent me, it seems a little pricey to me. Plus, it was the ONLY place in PV I found that I loved. So that's why I'm thinking Cabo now.

It is actually pretty hot in May and June in Cabo, it will be a nice break from the SF spring chill.

Cabo is a desertic climate, and PV is more tropical, so it is less humid in Cabo, but definetely not colder.

Good luck with your planning!

What temperature does it get down to at night? I know that seems unimportant but I'm always cold and to me there's something magical about a place where you can walk around in shorts and a tank top at 3 in the morning like you can in Cancun, and in places like Palm Springs and Vegas in the summer.

One other factor that I must consider is that in PV the chance of rain each day from June onward is almost 100%! I don't really want to have to worry about the rain so, even though it's not tropical, perhaps Cabo really is the best choice...

Are you guys happy with the decision you made? Does anyone regret the location they picked?

Thanks again!

- Jen

After having been to Cancun, Cabo, and PV each at least a half dozen times over the last 10years, Cabo is the preferred destination, IMO. I think Cancun would be too humid in June...not conducive for hair & makeup. Proximity to west coast and a short 2-3hr flight was also a contributing factor.

Hi Jen - I know you posted this in the Cabo forum but I thought I would reply because of how I came to my decision.

My FI and I were absolutely set on Cabo (we are in San Diego by the way)...we went down there for New Years Eve to do our site visits - while we loved it...it was just way too expensive for our guests. That was most important for us....I ended up getting PV pricing after and I was able to get an amazing wedding coordinator and a ton of other extras by going to Puerto Vallarta instead of Cabo...Also, when I got pricing from a TA - Dreams PV was about 1/2 the price for our guests compared to Dreams Cabo.

Don't get me wrong - Cabo is amazing - but I had to decide it on pricing for my guests above all - and PV beat out Cabo on that (by a lot)

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
