"Bare Minerals" vs. Professional Make-up?

Recommended Posts

Hi, My Dear Ladies of The BDW!

Ok, so I got suckered into one of those terrible infomercials and just purchased the "Get Started Kit" from Bare Minerals, in hopes of not having to pay to get professional make-up done at the resort on the day of the wedding. (After all, it's not like I will be able to fly to Jamaica for the weekend to do make-up trials with these people!) I am hoping that this stuff is awesome, and I will have that "fresh faced" look that they claim, but you never know what you're gonna get with these type of things.

My apprehension about getting professional make-up done for the DW is that I am still recovering from the trauma of too many Homecomings/Proms/bridesmaid-at-friends weddings "Gone Terribly Wrong!" Let me just say that I have misplaced my trust in some "professionals" that should not have the power to wield eye shadow and blush brushes or a mascara wand!

Anyone else using "Bare Minerals"/doing their own make-up, or should I give them benefit of the doubt that I will not end up looking like a clown on the biggest photography day of my life?!

And insight would be a gift!

Christie :)

I'm not using Bare Minerals, but I am doing my own makeup. My sister uses Bare Minerals and she loves it. I have used it a couple times and I liked the result. I use MAC makeup and I am just going to do it myself because I NEVER trust anyone to do my makeup. When I have had my makeup done they never seem to do it right and sometimes I think they want to sabotage me, haha. I really think you will like Bare Minerals, I would just make sure to do trials on yourself at home and then take pics to make sure you like the look. Good Luck. I am sure you will look beautiful wink.gif

Hi Islandbride - I consider myself pretty nifty when it comes to makeup skills, but I am still hiring a pro to do it for me. I've tried mineral makeup in the past, but haven't liked it very much because I have oily skin and it doesn't last on me or starts to pill and look even worse than my regular skin. Bare Minerals specfically leaves my face looking shiny (I need matte products myself). I have bothersome skin, though, so I'm sure you will have much better luck with it than I did.

The only thing I would caution you about is that lots of mineral makeup (not sure about Bare Minerals specfically) is that the primary ingredients tend to include titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Both are great because they are effective sunscreens, BUT they tend not to look good with flash photography (they will tend to leave a white-ish cast) For this reason, I'd recommend trying it out multiple times and getting your picture taken with it using flash to make sure your face looks normal with it on. If you put a light layer of regular powder over the makeup, it may solve the problem if you notice it.

Also, practice with it, and make sure you do try it out for the whole day to make sure that it will last for you for the entire wedding. With my oily skin, my #1 issue with mineral makeup is longevity. You might also want to try the Bare Escentials primer to make it go on smoother. Some say primers make their makeup last longer, but I personally have not noticed that to be the case. (Have you noticed that my #1 issue with makeup in general is longevity? LOL. Yeah, having oily skin sux.)

I bought Bare Minerals before the wedding, and have been using it since. I had my make-up done by the salon on my wedding day, however, I used Bare Minerals for our TTD shoot. The only problem with the salon makeup was they used a bit of a darker color foundation/powder on me since I had gotten a bit of a tan being in Mexico a few days before the wedding. I didn't bring anything darker so I had no powder to reapply throughout the day. It was really hot the day of the wedding so I felt like my face got really shiny. It is not noticeable in the pro pics, but the non-pro pics it is and the video is horrible!! I don't know if it was because of the bright light he was using or what, but my face is glowing towards the end of the video.

Anyway, I have never liked getting my make-up done so I had planned to have the salon do it and if I didn't like what they did I would have taken it off and redid it myself. I ended up liking what they did, but I was VERY specific about what I wanted and what I didn't want.

I also have the Get Started Kit from Bare Minerals and it was a great investment. I love it as an everyday makeup, especially since it has SPF in it. Like other brides mentioned, I'll probably go with something heavier and with more coverage on the big day. But don't regret this purchase b/c if you like the natural but polished look, you'll probably love bare minerals.

I used the Bare Escentuals "get started" kit for my wedding day makeup (also did my own makeup that day). I was pretty satisfied with the outcome. I would use it daily but I lost my tan since the wedding and need to start up again as the makeup I bought was much darker than my untanned complexion. Good luck!! :)

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
