Non-Legal Marriages-when are you making it legal?

To all that are doing the Non-Legal ceremonies when are you making it legal? before you go or after you come home? And why are you doing it this way?

We're doing our legal thing the day before we leave for Mexico. I want the marriage to be "real" while we're on our honeymoon and at our ceremony as opposed to waiting until we get back.

Same here - we're also making it legal the week before we leave for Cancun. We were going to have the civil ceremony down there, but didn't want to have to worry about the blood tests/paperwork etc...we just want to relax as much as possible

We're actually getting "legally married" in July, although our wedding isn't until November. The reason its 4 months ahead of our wedding is because we bought a house and his parents aren't comfortable with us living together before we're married. Since we knew we were going to get married before the actual ceremony anyway (due to the hassle of bloodwork, paper translation, etc) we figured we might as well do it a little earlier so we could live together. We're not telling anyone though, except for our parents. I won't consider us "Married" until our wedding this november! It seems like a BUNCH of people get married before hand and reading through the forum made me feel a lot better about it!

We too have been contemplating whether we should do the legal stuff before or in Mexico. Right now we have it planned to take care of legal stuff in Mexico but after thinking about it... it might make more sense to do it before.

 

Reasons:

We are moving to Africa (for a few yers) less than a month after the wedding... if we make it legal beforehand, I can take care of all the name change stuff, including my passport. Does anyone know if this is necessary to change? Seems like it would make things easier if had it change...

 

The Mexican rule that you have to have the officiant speak Spanish and all that...

Ideally we would like to have our good friend be our "officiant" .. if we made it legal beforehand, we can do whatever we want for the ceremony right?

 

And then theres the blood work and all that...

 

If anybody knows more about name changing and traveling please let me know!

We are getting legally married the day before we leave... We just don't want to deal with all the extra stuff of getting legally married in Mexico.

I'm planning to do it right before I leave. From what I've heard, it makes it much easier to do name changes when you have marriage certificates from your own state/country...especially for drivers licences, which in New Jersey are a big PITA. I'm not going to tell anyone, and have someone who can't come to the DW be our witness.
