I was in the Gran Bahia Principe in Puerto Plata last year with my FI. One day before we were going to travel out of the resort, I sat on the bed counting money to bring with us. Once on the bus, I realized that I had left it on the bed! >< I was worried that the cleaning staff would take it, either to steal, or thinking that it was a very big tip. When we got back, the money had been placed neatly on our night table and not a cent was missing. I was very happy with the service there. Not sure if it helped, but each day we would leave them some tip and we also brought them upopened perfumes+colognes we had gotten as gifts but weren't going to use.

Also, some insurance policies cover certain valuables while you are away. If you get something stolen, make sure you file a report with the local police. You'll need a copy of their report as your insurance company will ask for it.
