How to avoid your room being robbed while traveling

putting your stuff in the safe just makes it easy to get robbed. they can find your valuables in seconds instead of having to look through bags.

i warned all our guests about this, but many didn't listen. luckily no one was robbed, but another couple at the hotel was. they were packing to leave and could no longer open their safe. they also missed their ride to the airport dealing with it.

I have never had anything of mine stolen while traveling, but have heard horror stories from others who have. I've started bringing my own mini safe with me when I travel. It's small enough to fit inside my suitcase and not take up too much room, but big enough for things like jewelry & money. However it wouldn't fit my camera in there, but I usually always have my camera with me anyway.

One of my friends who travels alot also warned me to NEVER put your valuables in the room safe for the very reason named here. Kinda sucks, but I guess c'est la vie!

haha, nope never hidden weed in a highlighter. I just assumed that was the purpose of the video from the bob marley music playing. then i read some of the comments below & many were about hidding your weed.

anyone remember the SNL skit "you could put weed in there?"

Still, i was thinking that a pack of highlighter safes could be a good addition to the OOT bags. My favorite is the underware with fake skid marks for hidding your money in. Someone posted that on BDW a while back. You could always paint a pack of underware for the OOT bags.

The problem is, small things are usually first to disappear. t-shirts,socks,pens,markers,make-up,small $ bills- those are the things I hear about the most. Perhaps because hotel's staff is involved and they may think you will not notice them until you arrive back to your country.
If a marker or a pair of socks disappears from your room. Wouldn't you first think that you either forgot it back home or you just can't find it?

Also, it's obvious, but you shouldn't leave any valuables in plain sight. As you may know, doors are usually kept open when rooms are being cleaned. Last thing you want a thief who's walking by your room to know you have a laptop in your room.

For laptops you can buy an audible cable lock. Some even have GPS devices installed that can call your cell phone if someone will try to move your laptop/bag.

Personally, I don't think every "omg, I had XXX stolen" is true. A lot of people don't pack until the last minute and then forget things. If you are rushing, you may just not notice it! That's how our brain brain work.
Don't believe me, watch this video:

Also, electronic hotel keys are programmed individually for each door. If anything gets stolen, just ask a manager to see who was the last person to use the key in your room.
Housekeeping personal usually have keys that programmed for specific units/floors. And only managers are allowed(front desk don't have the access) to make master keys. Most hotels only have 1-2 master keys for the whole property.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
