I etched starfish on to a glass container this morning and wanted to share because it was SIMPLE.

I purchased sheets of blank stencils and used an exacto to make my starfish design. Then you tape the stencil to the glass with masking tape and apply the etching cream.

After five mintues, you rinse the etching cream completely off and let dry.

This was a test -- but I'm planning to etch these on to the glass vases we are going to buy for the sand cermony - which will be MUCH cheaper than getting them engraved by someone else.

Cost:

Stencil: $7 at Michael's

Etching cream: $11 at Michael's

(These are regular price -- so with your 40% coupon, it will a lot less).

The stencil is reusable and there is enough cream in the small jar to do dozens (if not more) of these.

Getting started.

Edit: I should have noted that I bought this particular glass to test -- it was a dollar at Michael's.

I did a tester flute first they were so cheap at pier 1 and it really helped. I really got the technique down and the other 2 were a breeze!!! The etching cream will seriously last forever!!!

I'm thinking about doing dots and swirls on martini glasses... fun!

FI made me a set of wine glasses for Christmas. They were the cutest things I had ever seen. One had my name with polka-dots and an elephant (my favorite), one had his name with a moose on the back (my nick name for him), one had our dog's name with a bird (she is a bird dog) and one was just the inital "R" (which will be my new last initial when we get married).

He did such an awesome job and put so much love and effort into them. The only advice I have is to make sure you get a bit of a thick glass because two of mine broke before he was even able to give them to me (he was so upset). He bought the glasses for cheap because that is just the way we are and then regretted it after the two broke. He used a drimmel tool to do the etching though, so you might be fine with your tools.

BudgetBride and JNL -- I really can't stress how SIMPLE it is. Honestly, I figured I was going to need to try a couple different times to get it just right -- and while there are a couple of things I'll tweak, I wouldn't be sad if I had to use my first attempt either. Good luck!

KatyKo -- that was very sweet of your FI. I imagine that the dremmel is a little bit harder on the glass than the etching cream, but you can never be too careful. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks, Memi -- just cream and a paint brush.

As an FYI though -- I got the reusable stencil. You are meant to be able to pull it off and use it again on multiple projects. To a degree it works, but you have to be really, really careful to make sure it is fully stuck to the next project. Some of my starfish are ending up with really fat legs where the stencil didn't completely stick! :)

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
