"Gift" from my Parents (rant)

Recommended Posts

Hi girls,

I've been meaning to get this off of my chest for a while and I'm not sure if anyone other than my DH agrees with me on this...maybe I'm crazy but I need to know what you all think!

Ok, so my parents payed for my two week stay at the Iberostar (which was awesome) because DH's parents were paying for his two week stay at the resort. Then my parents decide to pay for my older and younger sisters' one week stays at the resort claiming it to be a " wedding gift" to me since they THINK my sisters can't afford it. I don't want to sound spoiled, but how the f*** do my sisters get a FREE vacation and it is somehow a "gift" to me?? They BOTH make more money than me and my younger sister has next to NO living expenses (she lives in my step-dad's condo for $300 rent...I have a mortgage, hello!!). This whole post probably sounds incredibly spoiled on my part but I just can't follow their ass-backward logic. Sigh...

Am I the only one who thinks this is f'ed up?!?

I can totally understand how this is feeling like a little bit of a shaft when your sis gets a free vacation. I imagine i might feel similar. I don;t really have anything to say except that I can see where you are coming from. They really shouldn't have said that it was a wedding gift to you. Maybe they should have just paid for it and kept quiet. That's how I would feel.

I totally agree, you are definitely not crazy!

My dad told me how much he has saved for my wedding, then started saying how everyone's flights and accommodations would be coming out of that (everyone being me, FI, my parents, sister & brother). I went a little nuts on him and that got retracted. So, he's paying for my FI & I, my brother, and their accommodations but not our flights or my brothers. I'm using the rest of the $ for the actual wedding and my dress. :)

Can you tell your parents, wow, that's really sweet of you but do you mind explaining how it's a gift to me?

Aw thanks girls, it's so nice to know I'm not cuckoo!

It's funny, I think they were calling it a "gift" because they don't want to have to get us a real wedding gift...isn't that awful? I know for a fact that they are very well off (as my mom likes to often bring up the fact that my step-dad has millions in savings and investments and so much money that his banker encourages him to spend it), not that I expect a huge gift or monetary compensation but don't use my sisters' vacation expenses as your cop-out. That is bull. I even told her that it didn't make any sense and she just shrugged me off. So essentially they didn't really give me a gift at all if you think about it since them paying for my vacation and my sisters' vacation makes the three of us on an even playing field. The worst of it is that when my mom was raising us she would always push this crap about trying to be fair to all three of us, yet here we are. It just really frosts me lol. Thanks again for understanding ladies!!

I just also wanted to mention that she is probably trying to "punish" me for having a DW because she mentioned more than once over the six months before the wedding that it would have been just SO much easier if we had it at home. Easier for who exactly? Not us and a DW was what we wanted and is STILL cheaper than having it locally.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
