Fresh flowers & cake - bad idea!

I never ever thought about this but it makes perfect sense! I was watching some bridal cake show on tv one day and they made the most beautiful sugar flowers - they looked so yummy too! I think that is totally the way to go!

Thanks for the heads up! Definitely don't want to risk anyone getting sick after the wedding.

I wouldn't take a chance on doing that either. Bacteria travels up the stem into the flower heads as well.

Y'all, I don't think it's a coincidence that this person is a vendor who sells artificial flowers to destination brides! Think of all of the wedding cakes you've eaten that have had fresh flowers on them-- have you ever gotten sick?

I think you are wrong here. I have done this many times and had many cakes with fresh flowers on them. Sorry, but I disagree with you.

You are from Toronto, so I know you have heard of Bonnie Gordon and I took lessons from her, I would think she would have had an instance or 2 in her many years as a cake decorator of where someone got sick from real flowers and would have steered us away from them, but she made no mention of this and would have for sure if it was an issue.

To be honest, I also had real flowers on my wedding cake! And have been to MANY MANY weddings where real flowers were used on cakes. I know there are probably some flowers that probably would be poisonous if you ate them, and maybe if you stuck them in your cake.

 

I think if you are concerned about it being dirty or whatever....I would wrap the stems with saran wrap....I've done that before. Quite frankly, if you've ever seen the inside of some of the silk stems, you would be more concerned about those than real flowers!!

I'd be more worried about using artificial flowers on my cake. Most are manufactured in China, shipped overseas, and warehoused. Just imagine the possibilities for contamination! I highly doubt any sick flowers would be used for a wedding because they die quickly and rot. If your wedding flowers look good I wouldn't worry about it.

i have to say i am not a florist or a baker but i had white orchids on my wedding cake and nobody got sick. aren't there also edible flowers? how do the stems differ from non-edible flowers?

 

it would seem to me that most reputable vendors are in the business of having happy clients and wouldn't jepordize their businesses if this was such a bad idea - it is one of the most commonly seen things at weddings (regular and DW)

I had no intent of SELLING anything....it was just good avice to everyone who is concerned....I would never want to be sued by a bride whose guest got sick.....this is what we're taught in floral design school so I wanted to share. If you do not agree that is fine. I suggest reading up on it and making your own decision.

An if you read my post correctly, I posted a link to flowers who are considered edible. I was just stating my practice that I will not insert fresh flowers in a cake...

I am a reputable vendor and I do quite well in my business thank you. I don't need to use scare tactics to gain customers....that's a pretty harsh accusation to make.
