Not only did one of my relatives have a total cash bar at his reception, he also MADE PEOPLE PAY FOR THEIR OWN SOFT DRINKS! Only the water was free to drink.....I couldn't believe it!

I have never had to buy a soda at a formal wedding reception before -- "cheap! cheap! cheap!" (They should have had birds announcing that as people walked into the wedding, to remind them not to leave their wallets out in the car if they were thirsty during the summer heat!)

This is actually pretty standard at all the weddings I've been to. The prices are usually lower than normal, but it's almost never an open bar. But then again I'm from Newfoundland & we are not known for "sipping"!! It would bankrupt the b&g to have to pay for the guests booze!! But things are a lot different there too - it's not uncommon to recieve less than $50 as a gift either. But the dinner plates at not overly expensive - it's all relative I guess!

Where the bar was in a different room then the rest of the wedding reception, it took away from it b/c the guests were separated the entire night..a lot of the guests had the same feeling. The bar wasn't only in diff room but the hall is the type that has more than one wedding at a time, so the guests were mixed in with strangers from another wedding at the bar.

I agree with that 100%. I've NEVER been to a wedding with an open bar. It's either been cash bar or BYOB. If anyone was to host a wedding with an open bar, I can assure you that almost EVERYONE would get wasted! That's probably why we don't do it... Well, that and it would cost thousands of dollars lol And when both of my sisters got married, most "gifts" were cash in a card, usually $20.

wow if i were a newfie i probably would have been married at home! i can't believe open bars are rare there! they are STANDARD here ... like if you can't afford an open bar for your guests then just elope because all your family and friends will think you're cheap as hell.

we sure as hell couldn't afford it ... thus the DW! and amanda, we don't "sip" either so that's why it was at an AI! wink.gif

i can't imagine having to pay for soft drinks tho. i think i would have walked out. seriously.

then again, gifts are usually cash in card, and upward of $100. still no one even breaks even unless their parents or someone else paid for the wedding, considering the "average" wedding reception costs at LEAST $100 per head. so if a couple comes and hands you $100 check, you still lost $100. it's stupid really.

thank god for DWs!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
