Anyone shipping cake to site??

I know this sounds weird, but I was wondering if any DB's are using any bakeries from the mainland who ship anywhere?

 

I really need another cake option fast. Our site is just lovely etc, but the cake was the worst thing we have ever tasted. And it was just ridiculously priced, even for this resort. It was so bad that I wouldnt serve it to my guests if it were free!

 

I tried local bakers, and that hasnt worked. I didnt even get to taste these. First one got ill, second one never got back to me for tasting while I was visiting. Im taking that as a hint on reliability.

 

Now Im trying to find someone good, preferably on the west coast who would make and ship a cake to Hawaii. Any ideas thank you

I didn't do this, but I will tell you now it will be very expensive. I know Sylvia Weinstock does them, but you are probably talking about $10K and up for a wedding cake.

 

If you really want to do this, look at bakeries in LA or anywhere that has a direct flight to Hawaii. Most bakers who do this will send someone to accompany the cake. They will set it up and make any last minute fixes or decorations. You have to figure travel and possible accommodations on top of the cost of the cake.

 

It will probably be more budget friendly to research bakers in Hawaii. Look for places that have won local awards or that provide references.

Thanks for the information. Oh no...$10G for a cake is not in the budget. There is a place in LA that ships these individual "cake bites" anywhere. Event planner referred me to them in case I want to go that route. She says their cakes are very dense and ship well.

 

I just had the vision of the beautiful cake and all of that goes with it, but as things are going...I dont think its going to happen. Not happy at all with the resort. They are trying to "make it right" as they KEEP saying and they want us to come to the resort everyday when we arrive leading up to the wedding to keep tasting cakes so they can get it right. Lets see....have the stress of cake tasting everyday, or spend the time with family and friends who are flying in from all over to be with us? Needless to say, I wont cake taste each day. No excuse for them to not have it right the first time. At $12 a slice!!!! Please. Funny thing is the cake is the most over priced item on their list and it was just horrible.

Hmmm..what part of Hawaii? I figure there HAS to be some bakeries that you can work with, even on short notice. It might even turn out better if you got a cake from a local supermarket and then took it in to be embellished/decorated. Even a supermarket cake would likely be better than the horrible one you tasted from the resort.

 

There are some great sleuthers here on BDW. If you narrow down the search area for bakeries, I'm sure we can come up with something. And what's your deadline?

This might sound odd, but bare with me. Costco, yes Costco makes a wonderful white cake with cheesecake filling. It is delicious! I just checked at they have Costco's in Hawaii. You could purchase the cakes there and then add flowers or decorations to them. They may even be able to special order them, to make them in different sizes so you could stack them.

As a cake freak (with the thighs to prove it) I can vouch for the fact that Costco does have delish cakes!!! Sam's Club does too if that's an option. And I've seen many a Costco and Sam Club's cakes decorated and they can be quite pretty ~ I'm sure they can spruce it up too if you tell em it's a wedding cake.

 

I agree with Savannah, where in Hawaii are you getting married? It is really hard to believe that there isnt someone on your island who can make a decent cake, especially because Hawaii is such a popular spot to get married. Have you checked through the Hawaii threads and posted a cake query in there?

Thanks ladies! Billysbride....those are the most beautiful children ever! You are blessed...and very busy I would think keeping up with them!

 

Ok...the wedding is in Kona (at four seasons). I made contact with what seems to be the biggest bakery there and she never confirmed a tasting..?? So I just left that alone thinking it might not be reliable. They were great with responding by email when they they told me to send a non refundable $250 deposit. I said I'd bring it when I came to taste and communication dropped.

 

I know costco is there and they have good cake. Is it too werid to show up at the four seasons with costco cake:) ? It could be a great cost savings and one of my BM's actually does cakes so she could do a little decorating I guess.

 

I was even thinking about getting a fake cake just for photos!! You can rent those.

 

Keep the ideas coming. If anyone can vouch for a baker in Kona let me know. Wedding is May 2nd.

I used to live in HI for a bit, and I totally understand about the non-availability of bakers there. That said, I'm surprised that the 4S hasn't been able to provide a good one.

 

This post is really just a cautionary side note - have you asked the 4S about any possible fees for bringing in an outside cake? My venue at the Wynn quoted me an cake "cutting" fee of $9 per slice for an outside cake. Needless to say, we are thus pursuing alternative options.
