MUST READ-- Mexico DW worried about travel

Recommended Posts

Okay, so there have been several threads emerging regarding the recent "travel alert" issued to US citizens. Some of the Mexico DW brides seem to either have their own concerns, or have guest with concerns.

So here is the link, from the U.S. Department of State, set up as the travel advisory system used by many countries when travelling abroad.

MIG: Mexico Travel Alert

Please NOTE: Mexico IS NOT on a "travel warning" it is on a "travel alert." The "alert" system is used when there is an incident or weather issue has occured, resulting in any sort of deaths or violence.

This "alert" is due to increased friction between one of the larger drug cartels and their issues with the police force. What is currently happening -- and btw has been happening for almost a year and a half now-- is that the drug cartels are assasinating the highest forms of authority within the police force. This violence is between the cartels and the "security personnel" involved, and typically erupts near border crossings (where they will be stopped and checked for drugs) and in larger cities-- where elevated officials tend to hold office.

This "alert" only indicates what many of us have already mentioned. BE CAREFUL. Do not make yourself available to criminal activity! Do not wear super flashy jewelry, do not walk back to your resort in the middle of the night, do not buy or consume illegal narcotics. etc. etc.

The "alert" is meant to remind people that they must use common sense when travelling into Mexico!

The issue comming up is that web "bloggers" are beginning to post "DO NOT GO" ratings for Mexico-- the secret: THEY ARE JUST BLOGGERS. They are giving their opinion (an uninformed one at that, if you ask me)

READ THE TRAVEL ADVISORIES ISSUED BY A GOVERNMENTAL AUTHORITY FIRST! Disregard the travel sites, the blog sites, etc. They tend to blow things out of proporation.

I promise you it's safe. I've been a GAZILLION times as a tourist, and I lived there for the summer (travelling into the hot spots of Guadalajara and Mexico City-- taking the subway there, chatting with people in the evening, partying at night)

You just need to be careful. Just as you do in every other country in the world.

I recommend forwarding this link, or printing out this advisory for your guests that are concerned. And I really hope that this helps.

I study media for a living (PhD in Mass Communication) and while there are bloggers that do have more credible posts than others it really boils down to someone's opinion and it is up to us as literate media consumers to find several sources of information. Preferably from reliable sources. :)

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
