Is anyone getting married during the hurricane season??

Recommended Posts

I just booked my wedding @ Iberostar Tucan and I'm soooo excited!!!! Someone in my wedding party just busted my bubble by asking me "isn't that hurricane season? what if we get stuck there??" censored.gif Is anyone else getting married during the Sept./October months?? How do you guys feel about the iffy weather? I was in Jamaica 2 years ago in mid September right after a hurricane hit and although there was a bit of rain here and there is was still beautiful. I'm getting kind of nervous though!

Hurricane season is June 1st - Dec 1st, with the most active months being sept/oct, but they occur just as easily in the other months. If you're nervous make sure you have vacation insurance, but it is not something you can control, so don't worry about it.

By the way, as opposed to earthquakes, tornados and other natural disasters, we know about hurricanes well in advance. If it looks like one is going to hit a certain area, resorts and airlines get people off before they hit by putting on extra flights etc. The locals want to be able to concentrate on their families and properties vs taking care of tourists (although, in my experience they do a great job of that even in the most extreme conditions) Except in the case of a direct hit of a stronger cat 3 or more, we've had weddings go on the day before and even the days after hurricanes come through with no problems.

There are things you can control in planning your wedding, concentrate on those, with the weather...just let it go...get in an island frame of mind!

We are getting married in November in Mx. While it is still hurricane season it is towards the end. The only upside to all that worrying is it is cheaper during this time. But who knows what will happen. We are planning on buying the insurance just in case. 2 yrs ago we went to Jamaica in early September and it was perfect.

We got married during hurricane season (in Cabo)....We actually flew THROUGH the hurricane. I was terrified that the whole week was going to be rainy and crappy, but the day after we arrived, the sun was shining and it didn't stop for the week! cheesy.gif

I did have guests panic about the weather before we left, saying i should cancel blah blah....but it turned out to be a great week! The one thing you can't control (unfortunately) is the weather!

I'm sure it'll all work out!!! cheesy.gif

We are getting married at the end of October in the Riviera Maya. I was a little concerned at first, but we went to Playa a few years ago in February and it was cold and rainy the whole week. You just can't predict the weather so we are keeping a positive attitude! No point in stressing over it. There could be terrible weather if you had your wedding at home, too.

We are getting married in September and I always joke about a hurricane hitting, but I know either way we will make the best of it. It is really about us getting married and spending the rest of our lives together. Think about it this way it will make great for story telling and no one will forget it. :) 09/09/09

Thank you to all for your posts. I just booked the Riu Ochos Rios for 09/12/09. Like some of you, a few of my guests "burst my bubble" also with their concerns about the weather. My fiance and I have been discussing changing the date to November; however, we believe that weather is weather and we cannot predict it any better in November than we can in Septemeber. I appreciate your insights above.

Jess...a Sept bride!!

I was in Jamaica about the same time your were two years ago right after the hurricane hit and it was perfectly fine. It was a trip for my birthday and I was concerned that the weather would ruin my trip. To my surprise it was beautiful! It did rain everyday at around 4pm for about 15-20 minutes but after that it was like it had never rained. BTW my wedding is in mid August.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
