My son-in-laws grandma came to the wedding. She was 80, in pretty good shape, lives by herself, walks to the grocery store, goes to church etc. but has diabetes. Her two daughters came with her and the three of them shared a room. One auntie is a RN so she was really taken care of.

They treked grandma all over the place though! One day they walked from our hotel along the beach to Sayulita, and back!

Is there someone that can stay in the room with her and watch out for her?

When Kyle and I planned our wedding one of the most important thing was easy travel for our 3 grandmothers, 2 are on oxygen so we wanted a direct flight. This quickly helped us narrow down a location. My one grandmother will turn 85 the week before we leave and she is making the trip. Kyle's grandmother is 75 and she is also coming my other grandmother has become ill so she unable to make it now but unless there is a big health concern I do not see why the trip cant be made. Good Luck

wow, I am so glad to hear that so many grandmas/grandpas are making the trips!

when we decided on a DW we pretty much thought that our grandmas would not be able to make the trip to PV. well then FI's grandma booked! his aunt is also going who will help his grandma if needed while we are down there.

then a couple of weeks ago my grandma decided there was no way she would miss it! (She does not travel so it was quite a pleasant suprise to hear that she was going to go) My aunt too is going to help my grandma around at the airport and such.

So now we are just so happy and grateful that both grandmas are going. I just ordered cute tshirts from vistaprint that say "grandma of the groom/bride" I think they will just be so excited when they get down there!

Such important advise!!! Everyone should listen to this young or old but it is more important for the elderly, another tip (for everyone with long flights) is to point your toes up then point them down a few times in a row, about every 15 mins or so, this helps pump the blood and keep your cirulation going because blood clots develop when the blood is pooled in one place.
I think it is important to see how Grandma feels about making the trip and how those around her feel she would do. As well as any health issues that may become a problem. My 87 year old grandfather planned on coming but has recently had more health problems (cancer) and has been very weak and unsteady on his feet so after talking with my mother about his condition we brought it up to him and all decided that it wasn't a good idea for him to go. He is very immunocompromised=can get sick vvery easily and it is not a good idea to be around so many people. Although my 86 year old great aunt is coming who has diabetes and some other health issues and she is flighting down with my mom and staying with her daughter so there will be people around her all the time. She cruised a few years ago with no problems.

That's a good idea kaityko if we can't get her down there. Thank you all so much for your input! At this point I am thinking that I will try to get my uncle (her son) and my cousin to take care of her.... maybe she can even share their room. I did try to look into the shortest direct flights but the problem with flying out of OKC in the off season is that there are no direct flights and it is going to take 6-7hrs whether we got to Mexico or Jamaica.... If we had it during tghe travel season it would only be 2 hours or so to either but that wouldnt give pepole enough time to save up. We can request a floor on the ground level too... that will help.

I see that it says you are from Oklahoma...Where are you planning on getting married? I know this is out there, but maybe driving could be an option. Maybe someone (Aunt, Cousin, etc.) could drive her across the border...If you are getting married in Mexico it would work because y'all could just drive through Texas and cross. I live near the border and I have crossed before...also I have a friends mom who drives to Belize from Texas. Just a thought! I agree with the other girls...if you aren't getting married in Mexico just have someone fly with her and she can ride the scooter things in the airport to avoid the long walks to the gates. =)

As the girls have stated its definitely possible. I think really you just need to discuss w/ her if she is up to it, and have a dr okay the travel. My 80 yr old grandparents cannot travel this far so they aren't coming, although they were there for our legal day, and will be at our AHR
