We're recommending Intercontinental El Presidente and Barcelo La Jolla de Mismaloya. They are close to the hotel (in opposite directions) and have good rates. Kate is right, PF can handle parties, reception etc. with much larger numbers than just 60.

Have you already signed a contract with PF? If not, I would recommend trying to negotiate a lower rate for the offsite guests. $60/day is high.
We just saw the Barcelo in Mislamoya and it was beautiful FYI. Neat, secluded area.

Overbooking? Wow, I wish that I had that problem! At this rate I think that I'll be stuck with lots of empty rooms... I think that it's great that you have so many people coming! It will be tons of fun even if some people are at other hotels.

Oh no, hope this isn't the case Magalie! We only reserved 15 rooms, and are planning on inviting only between 40-50 people so I think it will be close! We have plenty of time though.

This week we put down our deposit with Michelle Turner -- so excited to have her shoot our wedding!

That means so far we have the date, venue booked and photographer set for our December 2011 wedding. I almost feel like I can forget about things for a year or so and still be okay haha!

Believe me, it's not that we're organized, it's that we needed all the time we could get to save money & have our family/friends save as well so they could join us for a destination wedding!

In other news, has anyone checked out these AWESOME wedding toppers from Etsy?!! Handmade Personalised Custom Bride and Groom by boogiebabys

I absolutely HAVE to have a set made for our cake I think... but will have to wait to see what kind of clothing we'll be wearing, etc.

Hope everyone's having a great week!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi everyone!! Sorry it took me so long to post a review, but here it is....finally!!

We stayed at Playa Fiesta for our wedding from Feb 7-14. Most of our guests arrived on the 9th and stayed until the 14th. I can not even begin to explain how wonderful our time there was, but I will try.

Blaire A+

First of all, we started planning our wedding in June. Blaire was our contact person at Playa Fiesta and she was extremely helpful, patient and knowledgable. She was always quick to respond to any questions. Blaire helped our whole day come together beautifully. Even if she couldn`t respond right away she would email to say that they had a wedding that day but would respond tomorrow. If someone told me I could plan a wedding a million miles away and not ever be stressed or worried about how it would come together I would have said they were crazy, but in six months I was never worried once.

Lindsay A+

Lindsay was amazing...She has been doing this for 7 years now and knows exactly what works and what doesn`t. She is extremely organized and this really shows. She made our wedding day run so smooth. We didn`t have to worry about a thing. There were no glitches or problems or anything, it was all perfect. Lindsay really goes out of her way to make sure everything is wonderful. She really cares about each and everyone`s special day and it shows. We had originally chosen some vases for our centerpieces, and although they weren`t 100% what we wanted, they were very close, however two days before the wedding Lindsay came to us, and said, I kept looking and I found these (they were perfect!!!)

Adam - B+

Adam is great. You don`t really see him but he deals with all the payments, contracts, etc. He is very fair and will work out different plans regarding meals, number of nights in your package, etc... The only reason he didn;t get an A was because on the last day when everyone was checking out there was a glich in the system and everyone was charged twice. However, he was on it right away sending out emails and letting everyone know it would be solved ASAP, which it was, however when we got our refund for the double charge, the conversion didn`t work out and most people ended up being still short $150. In the end it was straightened out, but it did cause a few problems for some.

Staff - A+

The staff at Playa Fiesta were unbelievable. Within the first day the all knew everyones names, and favourite drinks. They made sure the drinks were always full. They could have easily waited for people to come up to the bar, but they were always walking around making sure we were all happy. They took care of all the luggage, and the rooms were always immaculate. They also are very helpful. The one night we had scheduled just some appetizers as a snack the night everyone was arriving, but one of the kitchen staff came to us and suggested also doing a ceviche if we still wanted something light but wanted everyone to have enough to eat. Then they prepared two different choices for us and let us decide if we wanted it. Our group was so sad to say goodbye to all the staff at Playa Fiesta. They couldn`t have done a better job.

Hotel A-

Playa Fiesta is beautiful. The pictures definitely don`t do it justice. All the rooms have a little something different about them, but they all are wonderful. Even the standard rooms are beautiful. There is no elevator, which was not a problem for us, but it could be for older guests. The pools are great, both heated.. The dining room area is small and intimate but yet large enough that no one ever felt cramped. When we were at Playa Fiesta the beach was rocky, which wasn`t a huge deal...you can go down the beach 5 minutes or so for a sandy beach. The ceremony area was amazing. The view overlooking the ocean is incredible, and is such a unique setting.

Food A+

The food at Playa Fiesta is amazing. No one could stop raving about it. The taco platter for two was the hit of the week, although it would feed at least 4 people. Even something as simple as the sandwiches and burgers were great. The wedding cake was incredible, I don`t even like cake and I had two pieces. The breakfast buffet was huge and had a lot of variety, everything was always fresh. The wedding meal was very good...not sure if it was the nerves or the fact that Lindsay brought us up appetizers after the ceremony and we gobbled them up, but my husband and I barely ate any.....everyone else said they loved it though.

Photographer A+

Our photographer was Michelle Turner. She was absolutely wonderful. She took a ton of pictures, and was with us before the wedding day to discuss what we wanted. The day of the wedding she must have taken a thousand pictures but yet, we never felt like it was too many and most of the time we didn`t even realize she was there. Michelle is also very organized and knows how to keep things moving along. The day after the wedding we did a TRUE ROMANCE shoot and it was equally amazing. She also set up a photo booth for our guests. Everyone commented on how great she was.

She was very quick to do our slideshow and our preview pics. We got our dvd and ordered actual prints, but we haven`t seen them yet. However, if they look as good as they do online, she was worth every penny.

Overall, we can`t say enough about PLAYA FIESTA. All our guests kept saying it was the "best wedding ever". And it really was a perfect day. It was so sad when we left and we immediately started planning our trip back for next year. There were only a few things that we said we weren`t sure we would do again. One was the dance floor....although it was beautiful and the set up was neat to watch, we`re not sure it was necessary. Most of our guests danced around the pool and all over the place. I would probably do it again, but if I had to cut costs, this would be were you could do that. The other would have been the DJ. He was really good and called us before the wedding day to discuss what we wanted and what we didn`t. The music he played was awesome and everyone loved it. However, we had playlists done up for the whole week and even one for the wedding day (cocktail hour, reception and dinner), we could have easily played that again on the ipod and had one of our guests make a few announcments when needed. We were pleased with the DJ however it could be another way to cut costs if you have to (and you are organized). The fireworks were also worth every penny. We did package #2 and they were amazing. So happy with everything. If you are looking to have a destination wedding and still want everything to be special and unique, this is the perfect place. We couldn`t have asked for a better day!!!!

Wow Crystal, sounds like everything was perfect! Thank you for your post, it is very helpful! Congrats on the big day :) You must be glad that all the planning is done!

I had been questioning the dance floor and I may need to skip it since it looks like we'll be paying for 6 rooms... your comments help!

Hi Crystal -

Great post! Sounds like you truly had the perfect wedding. Can't wait to see your pictures!

I agree with Magalie, these reports are so helpful in helping us plan, etc. Also, not that I had questioned her before this, but it's reassuring to know you rated Michelle so high :) We're so looking forward to have her shoot our wedding! We got the TR shoot too as well as the photo booth.

Thanks again & CONGRATS!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
