Deciding Colors...

Recommended Posts

I used to work in a catering hall and always felt bad for people who had to wear brown bridesmaid dresses. Brown looked okay in the fall with the apple/fall centerpieces but it doesn't really match the summer/tropical location. I love your flower ideas and the color scheme but the wedding is going to be tropical with the ocean and sky and bright colored flowers, there is so much natural beauty that you can focus on that and put the girls in a neutral color... but brown is just too dark.

the dresses are super cute. love it!

to touch on the chair cover thing, i was super anal about wanting ivory cloths and covers for the chairs because my dress was ivory too. BUT i had a hard time finding the ivory linens, and when i did i realized that the shade of ivory cloth was a completely different shade of ivory than my dress and it looked totally wrong.

and when it came down to it, i didnt one time think about the chair/table covers on the day of the wedding anyways, i was way too emotional and involved in what was happening rather than the way it all looked. it just didnt even cross my mind! even when i look at pictures now i dont think about wow look at that white chair cover sitting next to my ivory dress. honestly i dont think i even sat down for more than 5 minutes the whole night!

not to mention lugging them all to mexico with you, think about packing all that material! yikes.

wow, sorry for the novel i didnt realize i had such an opinion on it till i started typing wink.gif

fyi i totally disagree, my mtoh had a truffle dress on and my moh had a truffle sash, and it was in july on a bright summer day, and the brown didnt detract from the summer location. it was part of my wedding colors and went with our theme, we described it as "aqua and coconut shell brown" when people asked our colors. but yes brown does work well in the fall too, its just that if you have a color theme, you go with it no matter the season. i just went to a wedding back in the fall where the BM's wore bright pink, because that was the color theme of that wedding. you dont have to set the color to the time fo year, its to set the mood of the entire wedding.

Here are my thoughts, for what it's worth! I'm not a big fan of sunflowers but I love the bouquet you posted and think it will look fabulous and play off your bridesmaid dresses and I wouldn't worry about the brown color being too dark for a beach wedding.

I agree that stressing over ivory vs. white for chair covers isn't worth it, but of course everyone has their own order of what's important to them! I have an ivory dress and am using white covers with white ties just to keep it simple. The thought did occur to me that if you do brown ties on the chairs, you have a lot of brown in everything when you didn't even start with that color on your color palette. What if you keep the chairs all white and just add a flower decoration - could be a small sunflower or some other yellow flower.

I would also consider maybe keeing the sunflowers to your bouquet and using other yellow/ivoryflowers for decoration. Sunflowers are so powerful, I like the statement it makes to just keep them in your bouquet (but then again, I'm not a huge sunflower fan as I said, so I could be biased here).

Good luck!!

ps - the main issue I found with flower availability in Mexico is the month your getting married. They can import anything if it's in season, so just depends on your budget.

Interestingly enough, I found a few different color schemes for "sunflower weddings" online today. I still think I'm going to stick with the truffle/chocolate and ivory though. I'm not real daring when it comes to colors. lol

THIS I thought was very striking and actually like it. But I think I'll be wanting to stick too many earth tones into my AHR to do this, but it's still really pretty.

Here is a sunflower themed bridal party with the truffle color..

Considering that my dress is going to add ivory into the mix, I think I'll stick with this. I'm definitely open to other yellow flowers mixed into my bouquet and the arrangements, as long as the sunflowers dominate. Maybe have the moh's bouquets be the opposite? Dunno. I'll figure it out as I go I guess.

And thanks for the heads up on the chair covers. It may not end up mattering overall. I guess I was just thinking of initial impression and those long shots/wide angles of the ceremony. I noticed last night that with so many different ivories, it's going to hard to match the dress. Bah! The devil is always in the details, huh?

I do think I'll try to use the chair sashes though, with some type of small sunflower arrangement on the backs tied in. I just can't see plain, stark white chairs. It is more brown than I'd anticipated, but as long as the brown is livened up with the arrangements, I think I'll like it well enough. I've got time, so maybe I'll play around with some stuff.

I didn't really even think about the white/ivory chairs. Honestly, I had a ivory dress with gold detail... so it was REALLY not white. But my husband wore a white shirt, and our chairs were all white. To tell you the truth, you can't tell in photos. The sun is so bright and with all the natural colors around you (the sand and the water) it just blends very nicely together. So, I agree with the rest of the ladies, just stick with the white and then add your ribbons to them. It will look beautiful! :)

Oh yeah, I had brown bridesmaid dresses too. I just gave them really bright flowers and it worked perfectly! :)

I hope I don't upset anyone by adding my opinion. I am also having color issues, so I know that any feedback is helpful. Plus...who wants to make a decision they end up regretting. I love the idea of the brown and sunflowers....if you were having a fall wedding, and not a destination wedding. The brown would look so great with brighter, more tropical flowers. If you really have your heart set on the gold-yellow colors, I would look into some yellow and orange flowers that are more tropical.

I personally think your choice for color palette is perfect ~ brown and ivory is such a beautiful compliment to one another and if you throw in either a gold or yellow accent, it's perfection. wink.gif Using sunflowers is such a great choice, I think they would pop so beautifully in the color scheme. Yanno I've noticed that brown is a love it or hate it color (i.e. an earlier comment on this thread), and of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, but if you love it (as do I) then go for it -- your opinion and preference is all that really matters, this is your day, your wedding, your celebration! humble.gif

Now I do have to agree with the other gals, I wouldn't worry much on the white chairs vs. your gorgeous ivory dress. Girl, everyone's gonna be so taken aback by the beautiful setting and what a knockout you're gonna be in your uber steal of a dress find, that your chairs could be flourescent orange with purple polka dots and your guests would think it was heavenly msnwink.gif

If you really want to draw away the attention from the white and tie in the chair color with your motiff, then maybe look into accenting the chairs with sashes in one of your colors. Last night I found a thread on here with a link to a great chair sash site that has fantastic prices, and I do recall seeing some beautiful gold, yellow, ivory or brown chair sashes in either organza or satin. Here's that site: wedding linens direct home page

But again, I think your choices are impeccable! I am the epitome of a warm, earthy tones kinda girl, so I personally can't wait to see how it all turns out ~ which I know will be fabulous I'm sure!!! rolleyes.gif

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
