My OOT Bags~ the big hits and the things that weren't used

Recommended Posts

I have done reserach on Mexico and read numerous posts on this website in different places, but that's why I'm asking if others have had trouble getting the drugs through.  Yes, everyone does these Welcome Bags and Hangover Kits, but there are certain things they don't like.  For instance, they don't like if you bring in textiles, like towels, they will charge you a duty for those.  I'm just checking here to see if other brides have had any difficulty with customs seeing their pre-packaged bags with sunscreen, lip balm, ibuprofen, immodium, pepto-bismol and said anything.  I don't know if we should spread these things out between the 7 people going with us and put things in there packages there.  Just like to hear some experience with brides that have gone to Mexico.  I know you can take in $300 worth of stuff per person, and need the receipts to prove how much things cost.  It's not the same as Jamaica or other Caribbean properties.
I flew in yesterday to Mexico with 50 "survival kits" filled with all the things mentioned already assembled so it was evident they were gifts. You don't need to declare anything! And I didn't have any problem! I actually sailed through customs (even with the 18 bags total for 4 of us!!!) and we all got green lights. Having said that I had also printed out and placed ontop of each suitcase carrying wedding decor and OOT bag contents (loads of stuff for 55 people) a note in Spanish explaining these items were not for resale but for my wedding in Playa. Never had a need for them and although my intentions when packing were to evenly distribute the Survival Kit between the 4 of us, at the end of a few exhausting days I couldn't be bothered and all of them were in one suitcase. I don't think you have anything to worry about. A smile goes a long way down here and being sweet so if all else fails or you get the red light I'd try that approach ;) But they're used to seeing brides fly in (there were 5 on my flight alone). Good luck...don't over think it.

What I mean is they don't like you bringing in towels or such items to give away in the bags.  I know a girl that had to pay a duty on them.  I don't know how much it was supposed to be, but she got them to agree to $150.  I don't think they care about the bags or any kind of linens or anything to use for the wedding.

I'm taking 5 towels for my OOT bags. I wonder if I can claim them as personal beach towels for me, my husband & son.

My advice to y'all is don't offer any of this info!!!! Don't "claim" anything...IF yes get the red light or are stopped just say its all for your wedding! If they further ask say you have a skin allergy and need these towels...but I highly doubt you'll be stopped if you play stupid (never claim things like this!) and IF you are the wedding explanation should suffice!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
