Thanks for understanding, Amanda! :) You'd be surprised at how many people think that's weird/wrong of me lol.

I'm also very curious to hear the answer to this question, I was wondering the same thing!

While some countries have a national marriage registry, Canada doesn't. Each province registers mariages that were done in the home province only (not in other provinces or foreign countries). As long as you have the "apostiled" raised stamp legalizing your marriage in mexico it's legal in Canada.

Missy - I got my marriage certificate back with what I believed to be the apostille but it didn't look like it was a "raised" stamp. It was a stamp on the back saying it was from the secretary of the government or something. Is that my official apostille? You have me worried now. sad.gif lol

Just so you all know, I changed my name, and so did 3 of my friends, without having the Marriage Certificate translated, it is in Spanish and we all got it changed, not even one of us was told to translate it. I called the government with respect to the name change and they told me it does NOT need to be translated and it will be accepted as is. Now I got married in Cuba and my friends got married in the DR, so I think you should not waste the money having it translated, try to change it first, the way it is. It worked for me and my friends, so give it a try.

Also, you do not have to register your marriage with anyone, not sure if that was said or not. I also asked this when I called and they said if you are legally married in a recognized country then you are legally married in Canada.

That is sooo bizarre. I know that government rules are that they are supposed to only accept French or English Marriage Certificates - although I have heard that some cities will bend the rules and accept the spanish one. I know in Toronto I initially tried with just the spanish one and they outright refused. Who knows really?

In terms of the apostle - don't worry if it's not raised - some hotels do it differently!

I called the government, that would be for the whole province and they told me a translation was NOT required. So unless something has changed in the past year and a half then there is no rule that it must be translated. I had my boss notarize copies for me, just in case they questioned it, but they didn't want those, they wanted the original in Spanish. I did my health card first and then my license and had no problem at all at either place. I then went to the bank, etc... and again not 1 place asked for a translation.

So weird that different places require different things!! LOL

If it's only going to cost me $40 or $50 then I'm just going to do it. I would HATE to get to the MTO, wait in line (bc there is sure to be one!) & then get denied! I'd rather have it & not need it; then need it & not have it! KWIM!

And thanks for answering my qestion Missy!!! I guess I could have just asked my SIL who is a lawyer too...but I like hearing it from a DW bride who is a lawyer more!! :)

    • First of all congrats!!! Costa Rica is a magical place for a wedding  Are you working with a travel agency for your rooms? If not, I would highly encourage you to do so because an agent can often help you get in contact with the wedding department to get that conversation/communication going. I would suggest working with Wright Travel Agency, the official agency of this forum. These agents are specialist in destination weddings and have access to great promotions and group perks in addition to being able to secure the best rates for your group. Best of all the agency does not charge any fees to use their service, but it will take a load off your plate not having to worry about arrangements for travel for you and your guests. Shoot an email over to info@wrighttravelagency.com and one of the team members will get back to you and get the ball rolling for your group and the wedding department! Best wishes!!!
