I emailed Marcia yesterday to book her for our wedding (which is only 4 weeks away! luckily she was still available) but i haven't heard back yet...I will try again tomorrow...maybe she is on vacation too ?!

They want it 4 weeks before. It cost us $110 to have our passports/long form birth certificates notarized, and then it was $70 UPS to Jamaica from Toronto (just to add to your wedding budget!)

I agree... I actually did the opposite when inquiring with photographers for pricing. I didn't feel I needed the photobooks. I would rather have the slide show and pics on a disc and print them as I want but in the end it does save you money either way.

So I heard back from Marcia's assistant and have the contract. In the contract it talks about Marcia being the sole and exclusive photographer.

"It is understood that “MARCIA E. ROBERTS†will act as the sole and exclusive wedding photographer. Due to the fact that flashes from guestâ€s cameras may ruin shots taken by “MARCIA E. ROBERTSâ€, THE CLIENT acknowledges that they are responsible for notifying all of their guests that guest photography is not permitted at any time while the professional photographer are in session. “MARCIA E. ROBERTS†suggests that a separate notice be placed in the invitations. The formal photography time is for the exclusive use of “MARCIA E. ROBERTS†to capture the formal wedding portraits. Due to time constraints and the need for subjects to pay full attention to the professional photographer, guest photography cannot be permitted. “MARCIA E. ROBERTS†will allow guests to take photos during the ceremony, reception,  snapshots during the processional and recessional, during candid events at the church, and at the altar."

 

While I understand that this is necessary I still want my guests to be able to take pictures as well. I have 2 people in my group who have really nice cameras and enjoy taking pictures. So, I know they will want to get some good ones as well. I have never taken professional pictures so I'm not used to this. Is this just standard procedure? I feel bad telling my guests that they can't take pictures.....

Hey I wouldhave your guests still take photos nonetheless and just remind them to be careful not to interfere with the formal shots that Marcia is doing. That's what I plan to do, since guests always take photos at weddings. I got to this point of planning with her and I haven't heard back since I returned my contract to her. Now I'm not sure if I've secured her services!

I think that her statement is referring more to the Formal pictures that I assume you will be taking after the ceremony with you and your husband, possibly family etc.  In my experience these are the photos that they don't want distractions multiple cameras etc.  Typically they are taking the time, creativity and all their knowledge to pose or get the correct framing and setup to make a good shot and they do not want it to be ruined or stollen by others.  Photography is an art. 

 

I also read this statement that I have coppied “MARCIA E. ROBERTS†will allow guests to take photos during the ceremony, reception, snapshots during the processional and recessional, during candid events at the church, and at the altar."  Which pretty much states that your guest are allowed to take pictures during just about every aspect but the Formal shots that I assume you will be doing at some point in time.

Hmm although i understand  some of where she is coming from .. i would never tell my guests they are not allowed to snap pictures... i think part of being a professional photographer is knowing how to snap around the guests and such... that kind of is what you are paying them alot of money to do... take nice photos but without ruining the other guests time... i will never tell my guests they can't snap photos.. but that is just me. 

I think putting a seperate communication on your info packages to state when they can and cannot take photos is snooty... again.. completely my opinion and my opinion only :)

Thank you for all your advice. I really appreciate it. I understand what you are all saying and I agree. She does say that guests can take pictures during many of the events and it sounds like she just doesn't want guests taking our attention away during formal pictures; I think I can handle that. I don't think I will include it in my invitation but possibly the welcome packet.... I do think it makes sense for them to want your full attention so I think I can handle what she says in her contract.
