Thanks for all the great advice! We're definitely trying to keep within a small budget. I just recently talked myself out of a really expensive pair of sandals, for a pair that's only $35. I eventually didn't see the point in spending $200 for a pair of sandals no one is going to see anyways!
We just got the FI a pair of linen pants from Banana that were $20 off, plus I had a coupon for 35% off. In the end his pants were less than $50!!! There are deals to be had everywhere!

One thing we did was use the wedding invites that fold over (trifold) and have a little sticker on the back. We printed our own mailing labels in a matching color and font on clear labels, and then the invite, response card and everything is one trifold with a rip off card. That way postage is regular and you dont pay for envelopes or inserts. We wanted to send about 100 invites or more, and we knew only 30 people were coming. It only cost about 100 bucks, and we had a seashell themed invite. It was perfect for our needs.

Make a list of what is important to you. Then compare to the checklists you find online. Look at the leftover items...do you need them or want them.

Example: I think programs for a small wedding are silly if we all have the same backgrounds and traditions. Plus most people throw them away. I will not have programs. I don't care for garters- they feel weird and I won't be tossing it. I won't be buying one.

Once you sit back and really think of your wants and needs it is easy to eliminate some fluff. Just think you have a stunning setting that guests will already remember.
I completely agree with you. It's so easy to get caught up in the excitement and then you see all these super cute ideas and it's so easy to want everything you see. But you need to take a step back and figure out what's important to you and then go head and splurge a little on those things - but then cut back in other areas. I'm def not doing a garter either and since we have a small wedding group I probably won't do programs, and def won't need to do seating cards, menus, etc. But photopgraphy is important to us, so that's prob one area where we will splurge a little :)

Having a DW on a budget is definitely doable!!

I did the same thing - I designed our invites myself in photoshop and I have a friend who's a printer and he actually did the printing for free for me. I did a hibiscus design and used our colors (fucshia and orange) and it really wasn't that hard. Then I ordered custom stamps and seals from Zazzle using our monogram. I liked them because they fit our DW - they were cute, tropical and not too formal. Plus they use a little less paper than a traditional invite so they were kind of "green" as well :)
