This was really helpful but I  am still puzzled. A budget of $10,000 or slightly below still seems really high to me. So I'd like to know this: What makes the budget so high if you saved so much money on your dress and centerpieces? Are you paying for guests' flights, accommodations, etc? Is the food that expensive? This question is not just for you but also for others who have budgets that are over $10,000. I was under the impression that one of the reasons why people choose destination weddings in large part because it is less expensive that a wedding at home for 100+ people.

Hi Koseefowokan,

We are planning for over 100 guests for destination wedding. We are planning to have our wedding outside of a resort to make the vacation more affordable for guests that will be traveling from abroad and family already on the island. We are utilizing three separate venues. In addition to the cost of our venues, we are paying for a cocktail hour, full dinner and open bar for our guests on the day of the wedding.  We have hired a band and a DJ and are having a four layer cake. We also have floral centerpieces and decorations for the venue. Our attire and our travel are also adding to the expense as well as the spending money for our honeymoon. Finally, we have a wedding coordinator and her staff that will be putting the whole thing together.

We chose the destination wedding for convenience and location. We knew we wanted a traditional Caribbean menu. Many US locations want you to use their caterers so we knew it would be easiest to just have our wedding in the Caribbean where we would have a selection of good Caribbean caterers. Also, at our price point, a wedding planner in the US would basically just take our money and do nothing really. The wedding planner we have hired really plans and coordinates the wedding. She replies to all of my e-mails and goes out of her way to bring us ideas and make us feel special. All we have to do is make selections.

Basically, the wedding we are having would cost over 40K in the states (which would be totally unattainable for us) and we aren't even at half of that having a destination wedding. Having this destination wedding is allowing us to have an unaffordable dream wedding. I could have easily have spent what we are spending on a wedding at home after tent rentals, caterer, etc and a lot of headache. It would be a nice wedding but just not what we wanted.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for posting!

I need to constantly remind myself that I need to wait.

Figure out what I really need, make sure I know the exact number etc.  I just get so excited and want to buy things to get a jump start, but in the end I don't need 75 extra travel mugs just cause I want to order them now :-)
Thanks again!

OMG, I am the same way!! It is hard not to get too excited about things though!  I'm at the beginning of my planning so I need to trust that I will find other things and I don't have to buy everything now!

Wow, and I thought it was just me!!! I did jump start and buy fans without knowing the total number of people attending.. I bought 60 of them but they were on sale for .59. I bought 60 thinking not more than 60 people can really come with shipping under $50.00. It would of been more at it's actual price to buy 30 of them... idk at least we all are admitting that we have a problem!! I've been buying things hat I can now this early... flower girl basket, postcards for oot bags, pen for guest book, hangers from etsy. Things I know won't change!!

What I am about to type is probably comforting albeit possibly bad advice... you could always sell what's not personalized.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
