please help change of wedding location!!!

Recommended Posts

My fiance and I are planning on getting married at Aventura Spa Palace on Feb 6th 2009. Thats less than two months away!!! Last night we were looking around online and came across Excellence Riviera Cancun. We fell in love with it. We loved the hotel itself, the location, and the wedding set up on the beach is exactly what we pictured when we started planning a destination wedding. We would even recieve $800 off the wedding package for booking 7 days with them.

Do you think it is rude of us to change our hotel so close to the date? Our guest will not need to change flights and they can all get thier money back from the old hotel. We even have two more weeks that we can cancle our wedding package without losing any money. We are going to try to cover as much of the difference as possible for our guests.

Our guests were paying about $211 a night at Aventura. This includes a group discount for 10 or more rooms and a nightly promotional discount. We are not sure if Excellence will give us a group discount yet becuase they have not contacted us back yet. After we priced a week stay it came out to be only about $30 more per person per night. Excellence is already running a promotion for 20% so we arent sure if they will give us an additional discount for having 10 plus rooms. This would make the price closer to the original for our guests and maybe low enough we could cover the difference for them.

So it will break down like this.

Excellence $3685 for a week for two people( with no group discount)

Aventura $2954 for a week for two people

Do you think that even with this 20% discount the hotel will give us a group discount? We probably cant pay for it if they cant bring the price down a little more. We really have our hearts set on this hotel now.

Hi there. I would definately get all of the facts BEFORE you make any changes. I don't want to be debbie downer, I know what it's like to not be getting what you wanted, then find it in the middle of the process! Been there done that.

But, even though it doesn't seem like that much of a difference, it is. Financially, and with your guests. We chose a place in April and changed it in June (Our wedding is in January) before anyone booked and all hell broke loose... and it was not people we expected it from, family, and things are still not the same. I just don't want you to deal with it- especially this close to your wedding, you do not need that stress. Your wedding day will be here so fast! Sorry to lay it out there.

So here is my question... what do you like about the ceremony set up that is different/ what you had invisioned? Has the Adventura Spa been difficult to work with?

If you are willing to spend extra money to get what you want... you could hire an outside wedding planner for a lot less to help you get the set up on the beach that you want... or there are several private beaches in the RM that you could have your ceremony at that are gorgeous.

When you change anything, you tend to get a lot of "opinions" from people - some good, some bad.

When Kenny and I got engaged, a year ago, we were throwing around dates for our wedding. Originally, back in Jan 08, we told people Sept 09. I started doing more research and changed the date to Dec 09 in March - mind you this is 1 year and 10 mos prior to the wedding - PEOPLE FREAKED! It was not pleasant. I changed the date anyway and told people they would just have to "deal with it" or not come (I didn't say it that harsh of course).

Bottom line is if you really want to change your location, then do it. It is your choice. It is your wedding. However, keep in mind by changing the location you are going to create a significant inconvenience for ALL of your guests. Asking them to change their travel plans and pay more money is pretty inconsiderate seeing as the wedding is only 2 months away and i'm sure all attending have already booked.

My suggestion - Show your current resort the wedidng set up at Excellence and ask them to copy it. Then, the day after your ceremony, go to Excellence for a few days to enjoy your first few days as a married couple privately.

If we make this change it will not affect anything other than canceling somethings. Everyone is flying into cancun anyways. Transfers are free through Excellence. They were going to have to pay 50 per person at ASP. And the extra money we plan on working a lot of overtime so nobody has to pay any extra money.

Our current resort cannot copy what we want because there is not a beach at ASP. You can only have the wedding in a gazeboo.

It sounds like you already have your mind made up to change the location. Like I said in my previous post - "It is your wedding". If you want to change it, change it. Our opinions do not matter. It is only what you want to do.

I would just suggest maybe testing the waters with some of your guests, before committing to the change, to see how the general reaction will be. Realize you most likely have some complaining (esp about the increase in cost) and if you are willing to deal with it all, then do it.

Maybe you should offer to pay the increase in costs for your guests if you change - people are generally pretty tight financially this time of year with the holidays and with the economy in its current state, it is probably a little worse for people than usual.

I would have to agree, increasing the price for your guests in any way would probably cause some kind of commotion. Whether or not you think you can handle it this close to your wedding is another question. And how laid back your family and friends are really makes a difference. I had a friend just get back from ASP for her honeymoon and she loved it! Tough decision though, but only you will know how much trouble it will cause in your family. If not a lot, then do it! You only get to do this once!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
