@caaaate - did you have a symbolic ceremony? If so, was there a script or anything they gave you beforehand so you could plan out your ceremony? Thanks so much for all your helpful insight!!!

      Hello!

Has anyone done a legal/civil ceremony here?  We are getting married in November and Mariana (our WC) has sent us the Wedding Application form that has all the info they need for us and the witnesses but at the bottom is a section called a "Marriage Agreement" where it asks if we want joint possessions or split possessions in case of a divorce.  We are a little hesitant on filling out this part and quite frankly even discussing it.  Seems like a pre-nup to us.  I asked Mariana about this and she said we have to fill that out if we want a legal/civil ceremony.  Has anyone had an issue with this? Is it legally binding in the U.S.?

      Thanks!

@KristinC  We decided to go with a symbolic ceremony to avoid all of the logistics, so I won't be of any help there. But we are getting married in November, too! What's your date?

        Hi KristinC,

I got married in a different venue but I am Mexican and can speak for what our legal ceremonies mean in Mexico.  Under Mexican law you have 2 types of marriage:

        - Joint Partnership (Sociedad Conyugal in Spanish) :  This means that anything that the couple acquires after they get married, e.g. house, cars, properties and such belong to both 50-50.  So in case you divorce you have to split right in the middle.  Anything the both partners own before getting married belongs only to them and it is not up for splitting in case of divorce as it was acquired before the marital contract.

        - Split Possessions (Separacion de Bienes):  Well, the name says it,  what each of the partner acquires during the marriage belongs to them (you have to keep invoices on your name and such).

Your marriage will be legal in the US for sure but I guess the type of marriage may not affect the negotiations in case of a divorce as you will be doing it under your state law.

        Hope it helps!

        Jazmin

          Thanks Jazmin!

So am I correct in assuming that by filing as either one (split possessions or joint), it really doesn't matter because we are living in the United States and these "types" of marriages only has jurisdiction while living in Mexico?  I just want to be sure.

November 5th!  Mariana has been REALLY great with responding to my many emails very quickly since the beginning planning last year, btw.

          @KristinC,

As far as my understanding goes, that won't matter in the US.  If you want to go the less complicated way,  get the joint one which is what would align to what the US and Canada have.

          Have a lovely wedding!!!

          Jazmin

Yes we did a symbolic ceremony (got legally married at the courthouse a couple days before we left for Mexico; so much easier!). They didn't give us a script, but I did bring my own music (bridesmaid entrance, bride entrance, and all exit on a personal ipod with its own playlist - very dummy proof) and we read our own vows. All of this was discussed at our initial meeting with our planner after we arrived.

Anything you want to incorporate they will be willing to work with you on, but I'd be wary of having an entire custom ceremony, just because the officiant we had was great, but had a very thick accent and I am unsure of how well he'd be able to handle an unfamiliar ceremony script.

Got some bad news that our Wedding Coordinator we have been working with for a year, Mariana, is no longer with the resort.  We have a new WC, Cynthia.  I've been in communication with her and I am hoping she is on top of things like Mariana was.  Also heard good things about Mariana from previous brides.  Hoping I don;t need to worry about Cynthia taking over.  Less than three months to go!

I heard the same thing. I have been dealing with Cynthia directly since Mariana left... I originally had someone named Angelica? But I believe she hasn't been dealing with me anymore. All of the emails, besides ones coming from Cynthia, are no longer signed with any name at all! Maybe they are all just dealing with emails since Mariana left?

I am just getting so confused by the emails I am getting! I sent a picture of an archway for our ceremony, and asked for a quote on the flowers going across the top of the canopy like the picture shows, and ended up getting a quote for like almost 8 grand where they were building an entire deck as an aisle runner...and another quote for a second picture I sent showing the same thing for 4 grand but using silk flowers......just extremely confused. LOL.

Congrats! I am curious to hear how everything goes! We are getting married on May 19, 2017. My future SIL got married there in 2014 and it was awesome!
