1) Reception Recommendations - For an outside wedding reception, would you recommend the gazebo terrace, pool terrace, or garden?

2) Music - Do it yourself sound system or DJ??  Which is the way to go?

3) Rehersal Dinner - It sounds like you can't make reservations for a large group in the restaurant.  What about the bonfire idea??  I would like to get my guests together prior to the wedding, recommendations are welcome please. =)

4) Has anyone done an alternative to wedding cake?  My finace hates cake (I know, Weird-O). =)  Any suggestions!

Thanks!! Can't wait to hear your recommendations!

Karin (Denver, CO)

Hi Karin!  Congratulations!

I can't speak for experience since my wedding is still coming up, but I can tell you what we're going with.  Our weddings are about the same size.  We have about 35 guests coming.

Reception - We're doing the Gazebo Terrace.  This seems to be the most popular and you are getting married in a popular month so I would reccomend making this decision soon or someone else may get it first.

Music  - We decided to do the music ourselves rather than hire a DJ.  It seems like both are popular options and it's really a personal preference.  We decided it wasn't worth the expense to us.  After much research we bought The Big Jambox, a portable bluetooth speaker, for $299.  We're taking that with us and making playlists on an iPod.  That was a cheaper option than renting the sound system and we get to keep it afterwards.

Rehearsal Dinner - We're doing the beach bonfire Thursday night.  Our wedding is Saturday.  We decided to do it as a welcome party rather than a rehearsal dinner the night before so everyone got a chance to mingle and get to know each other.  A lot of our guests are arriving Thurs so that's the night that made sense for us.

Wedding Cake - I think we're doing the cake that comes with the package.  You get desert as part of your reception dinner with the Ultimate Package so there is an extra option there, but I'm sure you could work with Cecilia to do something other than cake if you wanted to.  You may not get much credit for the cake but they will charge you $5 per person for the extra 20 people to add on to the cake so that cost may offset if you get rid of the cake.

Hope that helps!  Welcome to the forum!!

Hi KCDawn, Thank you so much for the recommendations!, I appreciate it! I like the idea of the Bonfire Welcome Party! Are you ordering food for the event? Or just gathering your family and friends? It's not really in our budget to have a private rehearsal dinner. :0( Please keep us updated on how the IPOD station you are bringing works out for you. Since you are bringing it with you, and it has a speaker, I'm assuming this means you don't have to rent the sound system, correct?

Hi Karin!!!! Congrats and Welcome :)! I am getting married in 80 days at SMB!!!!!  We have almost 40 guests booked already!!!!!

Here is what we are planning:

1) Cocktail hour on the gazebo lawn, private reception at the gazebo terrace

2) We are renting the sound system for the ceremony, Caribbean Trio for the cocktail hour, and we are having the DJ for 3 hours for the reception

3) We are doing a "Welcome Bonfire" the night before the wedding on the beach from 8-10pm. Everyone can eat on their own and then join us for music (renting sound system), open bar, and dessert on the beach.

4) We are using the wedding cake they provide. But I am sure you can work something else out. Ask Cecilia, she has been very helpful to me.

You're welcome!  Like Lola, we're doing the party later (I think ours is 8:30) and letting everyone do dinner on their own.  We're just having the bar, no food.  The idea of bringing the ipod station with us is so we don't have to rent the sound system.  I'm working on how to connect a microphone to it so it can be used for the ceremony.   We are having the mexican trio during the cocktail hour, but by using our own system for the bonfire party, ceremony, and reception it will save us a good bit of money.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
