Thanks baririce and beachbride2013.  I think we might have some trouble getting 80% of wedding guests to stay at the resort. =(  People would rather stay somewhere more affordable and come only on the day of the wedding.

We were not sure if we should pay for the guests day pass or they should pay themselves.  What's the etiquette?

So if 80% of your guests don't stay at the resort, is it not allowed?  or do you have to pay an extra fee?

As far as day passes, this is what we are doing...

We are sending out 16 invites (+1 guest each so it would be 32 people)... We figure about about 8 may rsvp (+1 guest each so 16 people) but of the 8 we think 4 may stay at the resort (+1 guest each so 8 people) &  4 other couples may stay in Playa Del Carmen.  We are going to pay the day for the 4 invited people not staying at the resort, but we are asking the guests to take care of their fee.  I can't bring myself to pay $100 for my brothers girlfriend of the moment or my BFFs guy of the moment, but I'm all for paying for my brother & my BFF.  Does that seem rude?

I am so so happy that I found this forum! I haven't booked my DW yet but I want to have it at Secrets Maroma! The price for my guest has me on the fence about the resort, so I have been looking for other options, but I keep returning to Secrets.  I just think it is the perfect resort for me.  I'm thinking about September or October 2012. I have emailed Cecilia a few times and she always responds very promptly, that gives me a great feeling about having my wedding here! I emailed a few other resorts 2 days ago and have yet to hear back from them.

I'm not really sure. I just read in some of the things that Cecilia sent me that 80% of wedding guests should be guests of the hotel. I think it's pretty standard for resorts. I would send her an email to ask her if that is something that they enforce, and what your options are. I do think it will have an effect on what wedding package you choose. Like the free package is for 10 guests staying at the resort (I believe, maybe wrong).

I think we only have a couple of people not staying at the resort. I put on my wedding website that there is a $100 fee to enter the resort if you are not staying there. If it were our moms or someone like that, we would pay. It's not though, so we aren't paying their fee. I think there are 2 people who aren't staying, and it is my fiance's brother. His brother actually invited like 3 or 4 people (without asking us first, yikes!) so we are not paying any of their fees. lol

Sillygirl, I really don't think it's rude or anything that you should be worried about. I think others may think it's rude, but I personally wouldn't.

Hello ladies! I have a questions for about hair! I have long hair and I wanted to wear it half up for my ceremony and reception (on the beach). Do you think this would be too much hassle? Should I just put it all up? ANyone have any opinions on this?

Also, we are having our ceremony on the beach and now I am starting to question if I should have my reception and cocktail hour there as well? Any opinions on this? Is there a better option for these events in your opinion? LET ME KNOW : )

YOUR wedding is at this resort and if people chose to stay somewhere else that it is up to them to pay for their own day pass! Just include somewhere in the invitation or whatever that for those not staying at SMB, there will be a $100 for a day guest pass. I did this with my guests and I have 100% of them staying at SMB!!! I don't think you should have to pay for anyone's day pass - you are paying for enough already!

You are right BrideRN... i am so going back & forth on this...

On that note, I emailed Cecilia about 80% of guests required to stay at the resort & below is what she said:

I read somewhere that 80% of the guests must be guests of the resort.  What if the majority of our guests stay somewhere else?- Would it not be allowed or would we be charged an extra fee?  In case of not all guest stays at the resort then you will be in charge of pay their day passes

Thanks everyone for your responses!  This is a great thread and I'm so glad I found it.  I will add a note to my wedding website that the day pass will be $100 for guests outside the resort.

newloves1975, Cecilia is great to work with and one of the reasons we decided on SMB as well.  Doing everything thru emails, it would be a dealbreaker if the WC was not responsive and helpful.

brideRN, we are also looking for opinions on holding the reception and cocktail hour on the beach as well.  It looks beautiful with the tiki torches surrounding the area, but our concerns are with sand blowing into the food or mosquitoes at night time.

That is sooo good to hear that 80% of guests do not have to be at the resort!! Even though most of my guests say they are staying at the hotel, I wonder if they all actually will. We still have plenty who need to book.

BrideRN-I am starting to worry about my hair. I really wanted to wear my hair down. I went to have my hair done yesterday (just a trim and hilight), and talked to my hair stylist about my wedding hair. Well, he is a wedding hair and make-up expert! He said because my hair is so incredibly thin and I have a ton of it, he really recommends that I do an updo. Really not what I want to hear! He said I could have my make-up done here, pick out some cream eye shadows (He told me a brand and color that would go with me really well), and to ask for a color chart to take with me. Then I can give it to the ladies at the spa and hopefully they can do it. As for hair, he really suggested that I do a trial run. He said on the beach, you just don't know how windy it will be, or how your hair will react. AAAhhhhhhh!!! I just don't know what to do!

I guess it really just comes down to your hair and how you think it will do. I really wish we had some photos of hair that has been done in the spa at the hotel!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
