question for those who have traveled to RM before

Recommended Posts

Lots of good advice here! I would agree, the #1 precaution would be to stay away from drinking the tap water. Otherwise, I wouldn't spend a lot of time stressing about it or over-thinking what you eat. Personally, I think the fruit is amazing in Mexico and I have eaten fresh produce on-site at resorts and off in town areas as well. Live a little! ;-)

But I also agree to have some pepto, immoduim etc on hand. . .just in case. And I think putting it in the OOT bags (maybe along w/ some advil for the inevitable hangover!) is a great idea. I'm a big believer in traveling with your own "drugs" anyway...I hate paying triple the price at a hotel for like two tylenol or something! lol!

lol, I'm such a freak - I NEVER leave the house w/o Pepto in my purse! (Actually I always have a mini-drug store in there) My friends always make fun of me but it has saved a lot of ppl a lot of grief on many occassions! ;P

I was just at the Moon Palace Resort (closer to Cancun than PDC) in February and they have a full filtration system. You can see it...it's huge! I was there with almost 15 family members and we had no problems at all and we used lots of ice and ate veggies! If you are nervous though, there are bottles of water everywhere.

  • 3 months later...

I like the idea of getting antibiotics before going though just incase I need them. I'll check with my doctor & see if I can get some.

I used to test drinking water for bacteria. You'd be surprised how filthy some people's well water is. They drink it all the time & never get sick. Its the stuff your not normally exposed to that can make you sick.

I can't count the number of times we've been to Mexico (all over, including the jungle). Neither of us have been sick.

Here's what we do:

-A few days prior to leaving and through a few days back, we take 3-5 drops of goldenseal 3 times a day in water. I also take a mixture of good bacteria everyday but DH doesn't (I take it for my overall health anyway, not because we're going to Mexico).

-Under no circumstance do we eat lettuce or anything with lettuce (or similar leafy green). Too many times we've had companions on our trips who have and who have become ill. We eat cooked veggies.

-Yes to bottled water, but I don't worry about the ice in margaritas if drinking at a resort.

-When we go off property, we don't drink mixed drinks - we always order beer and drink it from the bottle. No need to risk the glasses being washed in unfiltered water.

-If there's yogurt around, I eat it.

-We both will eat fruit, but I'm pretty sure it's always been fruit that has a peel like melon, bananas, etc. I don't think I've ever eaten an apple there, for instance.

I never thought about swallowing ocean water! That's an interesting point. I have been in the ocean quite a bit, though.

I was sick, but I was sick before we left. In fact, I learned after I got back from my honeymoon (when I got the results from some tests that I had right before we left) that I had been sick for two weeks prior - I just thought that it was pre-wedding coordination stress (ha ha).

No kidding.

I just thought of something I should share, btw, so that brides to be can relax a bit on this topic.

The hotels in Cabo (probably RM as well) will go out of their way to help you if you aren't feeling well (at least if you're the bride). They can arrange for a doctor to come to your hotel. Also, there is a medication delivery service in case you or your guests need anything or left anything behind. I recall it being fairly reasonable.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
