Dress Shopping on Saturday

Recommended Posts

Hey,

S2, 1008 - 12th Avenue SW, 668-4649.

I've been twice - and both times I booked an hour. That seemed like more then enough time. Since it is a small shop, they don't have a tone of dresses. I tried on 6 or 7 in that time there.

I think Jane is the owner. She sometimes can be bit standoffish when you first come in - but once she gets comfortable with you - she is super nice!

Let me know how it goes!!

Be sure to check out Cameo and Cufflinks!!! They are by far the best bridal store ever. I work in the wedding industry here in Calgary-so does my girlfriend and we have nothing but great things to say about the shop. As for S2 dont even bother. The woman who owns it is absolutely terrible. When my girlfriend and I went in-all the owner did was complain about the other customers there because they hadn't made an appointment. It was a non stop bitch session-which made both me and my girlfriend really uncomfortable. Also I had tried on a dress-that the zipper was broken and she got made at me for trying to zip it up-thinking that I was the one who had broken it. She flat out said to me-do not zip up any dresses-that this is what she is there for. Don't go there-it was the absolute worst!

Again I truly loved Cameo-I got my dress there and I'm in the process of ordering my bridesmaids dresses there. Nothing but an amazing experience-I love going there. The service is superior then any of the stores I have ever had to deal with. Thumbs way up!

Good to hear about Cameo - looks like a great store.
Sorry to hear you had a bad experience at S2. That's weird, because I've been there twice and talked to the owner on the phone a couple of times, and she was fantastic (although a bit standoffish at first, as I mentioned above). She went out of her way for my mom and I and didn't bitch at all. Perhaps she was just having a bad day?! Either way sorry you had a bad time - no bride should have a bad time dress shopping wink.gif

A note about pouffy dresses... I saw someone below thinking that it would be really hot. Actually, because of the netting underneath, it keeps the fabric away from your body and kind of keeps you cooler than if you had a straight dress on.

That being said, I did not wear a petticoat (and can't imagine how hot that would have been). I had them take out two layers of netting so that my dress would lay flatter as well.

Hmmm - that's a good point, Natasha. I don't remember how much crinoline this dress had. They did have poofy dresses specifically for hotter destinations (I forget what she said it was made out of), but I didn't like the way the material looked.

I'm confident that a poofy dress won't be so bad.

  • 4 weeks later...

Alright ladies... update time!!

So, we're going dress shopping again on Saturday. I LOVE that dress so much that I tried on before. I've dreamt about it, and thought about it more than I'd like to admit lol. So, last time my mom went with me. This time I'll be bringing my cousin (who is one of my BMs) and my dad wants to go too. So I'll have fresh opinions. I'll try on this dress again, and then we'll use it as my benchmark for all other dresses.

I'm just afraid to buy it now, and then fall in love with another one later. So, regardless I still won't buy probably for another few months. I have lots of time. The other thing about this dress is that it's a complete opposite from what I was sure I would buy. My grad dress was a simple ivory, one shoulder dress and when I try on non-poofy dresses I feel like I'm in my grad dress again! I want something that will make me feel all special inside lol. Anyways, blah blah blah.. i'll stop talking now! I thought I'd just give you gals an update. I'll try to see if I can get pictures this time, even if we sneak a few!

Yay - so excited!! :) Wish me luck!

Courtney, when I was looking for dresses I tired on so many, then when I tried on mine I loved it and didn't want to take it off, it was more then what I wanted to spend so I kept searching, but a few days later, I went back to try it on again and decided to get it. Yes their are SOOO many beautiful dresses out there and I could totally be wearing 50 of them if given the chance, so once you decide this is the dress, get it and STOP looking. Yes you will love another dress but what's important is the feeling you get in "your" dress..

I'm going to chime in too! I think it's more about the feeling you get in the dress than what it actually looks like and where the ceremony will be (beach, winter, church, etc). I wanted a very simple dress, no pick ups or anything on the bodice, and when I tried on my dress (which I didn't like in the dressing room!) I fell in love! Honestly, I was like a little schoolgirl with it on...but I didn't buy it.

I went back a month later to try it on again, and another that I really liked (which was also less expensive) and was trying so hard to pick the less expensive dress. But when I put it back on...my face lit up again.

You just know it when you try it on. And no matter how much time passes, it feels the same as it did the first time you try it!

As they said on Friends, there should be a job where we could wear our wedding dress every day! It just feels great to have it on!

Haha omg - it's so true. Maybe that's why I'm delaying buying it! I'm pretty sure this dress is the one, as soon as I put it on I had a smile on my face. This is probably the one I'll buy, but I might as well enjoy playing dress up a few more times! This dress takes one month to ship, so I'm in absolutely no rush!

***UPDATE!!!***

So, dress shopping today went REALLY well! I'm afraid to post pictures because when I look at the pictures they look so different from what I saw in the mirror. I'll post them, otherwise TammyM will have a freakout, but the dress I like the best I think doesn't look so hot in the pictures. Every dressed that was a finalist I asked my mom to "help me in the dressing room" and we'd snap a quick picture w/no flash... so they're not the best pictures!

Anyways we went back to the same place as before. For you Calgary brides (If there are any lol) it was Beautiful Bride on Macleod Trail (just across from Chinook Mall). I tried on my "benchmark" dress first to refresh my memory and still loved it. It wasn't my dad's favourite, but as he put it, he "won't be wearing it!". So here it is. I think it's the cheapest of the three, at somewhere aroung $700 - $800. It fits perfect already, I wouldn't need any alterations. It's also only a four week order. So here's option #1:

The second dress was on the mannequin last time we were there and I wanted to try it on, but didn't end up doing so (they were closing). So, while we were there it didn't make it completely to the finals, it was ruled out... but as I look back on the pictures it looks really nice. I might still try it on just to be absolutely sure.

ANNNNDDD... this was my favourite. Seriously, I don't like it in these pictures and if I do end up getting it I'll take pictures in good light w/flash and all! It's also a bit big, so it'll be a bit higher up on me and maybe it bit smaller, but after lacing it up in the back it felt snug enough. But she said for sure it'll be higher up. Also, the bottom part was really flatted from being in the bag, she said when steamed out it's bigger.. I was just getting too tuckered out to stay much longer! I tried this one on and didn't want to take it off. I totally loved it! I felt comfortable in it... and it looked especially good with the veil lol. So heres my favourite (Ugh, I seriously don't like the pictures!), and of course it's the most expensive at about $1,100!

Anyways, when I see the pictures, I think the last one is actually my least favourite, but the pictures really don't do it justice! It really is my favourite. I love love love it. It has a 6 month order time, so I'd order it soon and leave LOTS of time for alterations.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
