Lets chat about education...

So I am getting ready to go back to school to finish my degree. My problem? I dont know what degree I should be working towards. I have been working on a business degree for the last 8 years, but have never felt it was what I truly wanted.

 

Im going to an open house tomorrow at a local college for the interior design program. When I first started going to school this interested me but I never followed through because well I didnt think I had the talent for it.

 

Ive also been a little interested in a sonographer program to.

 

Why is it that Im in my late 20's and still dont know what I want to do with my life? I feel to old to be starting a new program.

 

What I do know is I defintely dont enjoy what I currently am doing as a career.

Although I've already pretty much knew what I wanted to do since I graduated high school, I have to say, I don't think you're too old at all to start a program. There are lots of people in that program I'm in now going back to grad school because they had change of heart and wanted a new career. Hell, I am pretty certain that even after I finish up all my schooling and licensing to practie therapy, I'm going to go back to school again for another degree I'm interested in. Nothing wrong with that! (Well with the exception that I'll forever be paying back student loans).

Ur note alone! I started off college with a pre-vet major, switched over to Recreation Management, did that for a few years and now i am in my first semester of Dental Hygiene. It is a great paying, flexible career i can take anywhere. On MSN last week it was listed as one of the growing fields and there is a place in Washington State that a Dental Hygienist gets paid $90K! How crazy is that? It's a lot of work and more goes into it than one thinks but the pay off will be huge!

You are not alone! I am always changing my mind and trying to figure out what I want to do for a career. I am taking online courses right now but I am still undecided on a career path. I looked at the sonographer program too, but I did some research and found out that it is harder to get a job in that field. You can also look into dental hygiene and nursing programs- you will have more opportunity and you can do a 2 year program at community college. The interior design field would be fun too though! Not alone! I'd love to change careers. I realize that at 30 it is very do-able, but I've already spent so many years and money in the career I'm already in. Not to mention I don't think I could do the whole student poverty thing anymore - I'm waaayy to used to my current income.

Are you kidding? I just got laid off and now I am trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up and I am 47! Not many choices for me. You have so many. Explore what you enjoy. Don't do like I did and stay in a job for 21 years just because you are good at what you do, but don't really like it. I should have changed careers a long time ago. I still don't know what I want or like to do.......

I think with the economy the way it is and the pretty dismal outlook for the future, you might want to think about the way people will spend their money and the need for your new career. Interior design is a lot of fun but what is the demand going to be? If you are oriented towards it, anything in health care or caring for the elderly would always guarantee you a job.

I am 25 and still not sure what I want to do with my career. In my brain, I keep thinking that one day it would be exciting to be a nurse and then maybe a veterinarian and then I would love to try photography and even interior design. And my education - degree in business marketing and public relations with a grad. certificate in nonprofit management!! Too bad you have to go to school in order to do all these different things

You are definitely not alone or too old. I'm 31 and last year I quit my full time job to go back to school. I thought I knew what I wanted to do, but now a year later I'm thinking I was wrong and now have no idea what to change my major to. So, don't feel bad for being indecisive. In the long run it will pay off because you will be doing something you love, even if it takes a while to figure out what that is.
